I know they grow on disturbed ground BUT where do the seeds come from ?? How long have they been in the ground?? Are they in the ground all over the world just waiting for someone to come and dig deep to make them grow??

Wow, that's amazing, I never knew. I grow some mighty fine tomatoes, I bet I would do great with Poppy's, where do I find these seeds?

You've got it in one! Poppy seeds lie dormant in the ground for years. When the ground is disturbed, the seeds "awaken" and grow.

The flanders poppys were supposed to have lain dormant for years until the bombing and shelling broke up the ground. Near to where I live one solitary poppy has appeared in a years old hedge - no one has disturbed it in my lifetime, and I'm in my seventies...
