What will happen to places like the Persian tea rooms and sheesha bars where the main attraction is smoking the flavoured tobacco in the hookahs? Will they have to close or will they be able to get around it on the basis that it is a part of their culture?

They are included in the ban. We had a smoking ban here and they were included. Their patrons had to go outside just like every other smoker. The ban was in effect for 3 months and I personally know 3 barowners who shortened their hours and laid off employees because of it. I think bars and private clubs should be exempt and let the owner decide. I have no problem with restaraunts and other public places having a ban. But honestly non-smokers are not going to make up the lost revenue of the bars and clubs.

The way around it is if they make it a private club and charge a yearly, monthly, etc membership fee.

And the rumors about how bars have closed down due to smoking bans. I worked in the bar industry when the smoking ban went into place in NY and guess what, not one business closed down as a result of it. If a bar closed, it closed because of lack of business and was doomed long before, not lack of being able to smoke inside. And the bar business is booming right now as well.

People go to bars to drink and hang out more then to smoke.

As a bartender I heard so many people say how they will buy a 6 pk at 7-11 and stay at home. Guess what, that lasted about 2 days. All the regulars were in the bar drinking their beer, doing shots and stepping outside to light up. It didn't affect business at all. It just made it easier for us non-smokers to hang out.

Oh, and if the business goes private, and charges a membership fee they can have smoking inside because it is no longer a public place.

Every hookah bar on my town has either had to move the activities to an outside patio, or they have had to do away with it all together. I don't think any of them have closed down as a result.

As long as the establishment becomes private (members only), they may continue to smoke in there. But I wouldn't know since I only smoke pole.

They'll have to take them outside, or onto a loggia or something.
