I have 2 and love them. They are no trouble except for having to clean cage and feeding. They will, if like mine, figure a way to sling seeds all over the place, and they do molt but you can get seeds that help that. As for talking, haven't heard a work in 7 yrs. but I've heard people say they can. They do like to chirp and sing. If you think you are old enough to be responsible for their upkeep, talk to your parents and convince them this will be a test to you being a responsible person. One other thing you may need to know. If you have a allergy problem, you may want to rethink it cause they do put off a lot of dander and it will irritate your sinuses. Other than that, they make a great pet that you can train to sit on your shoulder or finger, do tricks, and other good stuff. Be sure to get a young one so you can train from scratch. Hope this helps with you and your parents decision. Just remember this is a long time commitment and it's something you just can't throw away once you're tired of it. Have fun and enjoy!!!!!

Im 12 years old and 6th grade going on 7th. I own two parakeets. I really like them. They only cost around 20$ if not less and they are REALLY great begginer birds. Their chirps arnt really that loud and they make tame pets for kids(with proper interaction). As a parakeet owner, if you end up getting it, purchase the food LAFEBERS NUTRI BERRIES FOR PARAKEETS. I'ts the best food EVER. and my keets love it. MANY VETS RECCOMMEND IT. And the shape of the food makes sure picky eaters eat ALL of the seeds. It's a less messy diet too. Also males can learn to talk. Tell your parents hope this heelps. Also , you should go to Bird Channel.com for more info if u need it. Petco also has some online caresheet, you can visit their website.

I have a budgie (type of parakeet), and I absolutely love it. We've had him for 3 1/2 years now. He talks alot, my husband taught him to say "I'm a puppy, woof", he also says things like "I love you, I missed you, get over here, come closer", oh yeah and "You have to poop in the cage", unfortunately he doesn't take his own advice!LOL. Mine is a male so maybe males are better talkers, I think also the trick is to make sure you get a very young bird so you can teach it to talk, spend alot of time with it, repeating things over and over, start with something like "pretty bird". When I got mine, his wings were clipped, which helped alot in taming him, I let them grow back, and by then he was used to me and our house, and I was able to get gradually used to a bird flying around, as it can be a little freaky if you're not used to it. I definitely recommend one as a pet, mine is so tame, she will lay down on my chest and doze for a while. Taking care of one isn't at all hard, the most time consuming part is spending time with it, letting it out of the cage for exercise and teaching it to talk. Good luck!

Actually. Male parakeets are highly skilled talkers. They also excell at whisling tunes. They are a bit hard to understand as their voice is quite skweaky. They are great beginner pets though. I love them. The only problems they have are a tendancy to get tumors and a short lifespan of about 6 years. Check out utube and search for talking parakeet and you will see how talented they are!

Parakeets are the easier of birds to take care of. Pick up a Budgie/Parakeet book at your local pet store before you buy your little one and read up so you know the care of him.
They can say a few words but not too much, they can be "trick-trained" like any other bird. I used to own parakeets when I was a teenager.
I now own parrots, so budgie's are a great place to start. Also a great magazine to read about all species of birds is BIRD TALK magazine, which you can also find online at: Birdchannel.com
good luck!

Parakeets likes to talk to each others. If you want to get them. first read about them and there behaviors.I'm telling you this because you have to be very I mean very easy on them. Cause they love to make lots of noise from 5am in the mornings until dawn. And if you turn on the lights they will go at it again. I love mines dearly. They know if you are good or not. They throw kisses at you if you are good to them. It take a while for the birds to know you. They know they are in the land of the giants. That's why they like to bite you on the hands. When they scream is that the bird is afraid of you. Mine birds took one year to know me. They love me as much as I love them. One likes the television and the others dance to disco music and sing also. I talk to my birds. and they talk back at me.But I don't understand what are they saying to me.They understand me. And they give me this look like they know you don't understand what they are saying. So they rub their heads on the cage and throws you kisses.

No they are not hard to care for.Apart from feeding the correct diet, you will need to clean the birds cage/ contents of, on a REGULAR basis. This cannot be neglected. Hygiene is of the utmost importance to your birds health. You will need to provide toy's for your bird, and company!! Birds are social creatures and do not like being on their own for long periods of time. Please remember, birds get sick and WILL need veterinary treatment.Birds hide illness, so you will need to be vigilant to protect your birds health...

yes, my parakeet is a male and is wonderful, he sings and chirps all day, i would suggest only getting one so that he will bond to you and not another bird, and also give him lots of toys, a swing, and a mirror, mine loves to sing to himself. they are easy to care for but are messy somtimes so they need to be cleaned regularly, other then that they are great pets, go to a pet store and buy a book about them before you actually buy one, it will make things way easier for you.
