It wasn't the Muslims.

It was the Persian Empire, under command of the emperor Xerxes.

Google "battle at Thermopylae".

The movie is based on a graphic novel by Frank Miller (also wrote "Sin City"), but it's also based on an actual historical battle (the one noted above) between a force of 300 Spartans and several thousand Persian infantry over the course of 3 days.

It's a very interesting topic, and I HIGHLY suggest you read about the battle at the Thermopylae pass before going to watch the movie.

It does sound a little strange that anyone providing child care would let kids watch an R rated movie. I would think that they would have to get parental permission to take them to the theater or risk losing their state license so, unless it was a downloaded copy, it probably wasn't the actual movie of 300. I think you should ask your child to tell you what parts of the movie he remembers watching. See if what your told matches up with how the movie goes. He might have seen a preview for 300 or maybe they watched something on the history channel and were told that this is the basis for the movie. If you still have concerns that he may have been shown a movie that you feel is not suitable for children than you should talk to the care provider about it. You can tell them that your son mentioned seeing 300 and you are interested in what the children are allowed to view, wether it's movies or on tv. If you find out that for any reason that they were taken to a theater to view a movie without your permission, report them to the state. Not only is it not legal but, it's very dangerous. Any time a child is taken out of aftercare or daycare, your going to want to know that the person driving them is transporting them as safe as possible and that their are enough adults on hand to keep a close eye on every child. It's always best to get the facts but, my advice is to follow your instincts. If you feel that talking to the aftercare provider is what is best for your child than your not going to feel completely satisfied until you do.

It was set over a thousand years before Mohammad or Pakistan. The invaders were Persian. They were brutal, having crushed much of the world with their growing might. They are depicted as shallow comic book villains in the movie. They were real world villains in reality.

By the way, the movie was off on a few things. The Spartans were not fighting for democracy, the were a kingdom. The 10,000 did not use Katanas, that's a Japanese weapon form a thousand years later. The Spartans fought with very heavy body armor. Leonidas was most likely a very religiously devout man. There were no elephants or rhinos used at this battle. Most of those present, even on the last day, were not Spartans.

I enjoyed the movie, but recommend you read up on what we know of the real battle. It was one of the most truly heroic events in recorded history.

First off, they weren't Pakistanis, they were Persians (modern day country is Iran). Second off, the movie is based on Frank Miller's graphic novel about the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C. Since Christianity predates Islam by a couple hundred years, there were no Muslims, therefore the attackers were not Muslims.

The Persians were a very aggressive Arabic tribe in those days. As with any generalization, though, it is faulty reasoning to believe that since one tribe (the Persians) were aggressive that all Arabic tribes are aggressive. It's like saying that since people from Arkansas are dumb hicks (sorry all you Arkansans) that all Americans are dumb hicks.

VERY loosely based on history.

My recollection was that the Persian invasion was part of a tit-for-tat series of battles between the Greeks and the Persian Empire. The Greeks had previously sacked a Persian city, and Xerxes was returning the favor.

And they did. They pretty much destroyed Athens.

As for your impression of Arabs, be careful what you see on TV. The Middle East is a big place, and the media reports only the most dramatic and violent bits of it.

The guys in 300 were not arabs , they were persians.

It is interesting to note that this movie came out right during the time that Iran is being 'set up' to be waged war on dont you think?

To take over Sparta, obviously.

edit- Remember what the messenger of the Persians said at the beginning of the movie.

It was a power struggle between Greeks and the Persians.

Oh and the movie is based on a graphic novel.

This historic event (idealized in the movie 300) was long before Mohamed was a proverbial twinkle in his father's eye.
