I am very sorry for your loss. Without additional details it is not possible to say if the death of your child was related to being prescribed cephalexin. You are absolutely correct that if you have a true allergy to penicillin - not simply a side effect such as an upset stomach - you have a 5% likelihood of a similar reaction to cephalosporins which are a related family of antibiotics. Cephalexin is indeed a cephalosporin. If your medical record was marked as being penicillin allergic then a long list of people would have potential liability. The physician who wrote the order for the cephalexin. The nurse who 'took' the order off of the physician order sheet transferring it to the pharmacy. The pharmacist who filled the prescription. The nurse who administered the cephalexin. Such an error should not have taken place especially as there were multiple levels at which it should have been 'caught'. To offer an opinion on whether or not taking cephalexin had an effect of the loss of your child I would require much more specific information. Nonetheless - whether it was causal or coincidental - again I would like to say that I am very sorry for your loss. May God bless you in your time of need.
