I am aware of the upcoming Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008. How serious is the air pollution in Beijing? Is the problem being denied? Can Yan Ai or any others answer my questions?

The pollution there is incredible, I was there once in the early spring and on a day without wind we couldn't see accross the street. Unless it is windy or has rained recently the pollution is really tough on you, especially if you are staying longer than a week. Life expectancy is a lot shorter there than in the countryside, but the colder months are worse because the people still use coal for heating. I have read the government plans on using a process called "cloud seeding" to induce rain before and during the Olympic games to clean up the air, that is a total joke to many scientists. Beijing has much more pollution than Mexico City, the second worse of the cities I have traveled to.

Beijing pollution is one of the favourite grumbles of Westerners living there. I should know because I have lived there myself and found it a big shock when I arrived there in 2004. I think it's not as bad as it was in the 1980s and early 1990s when every household was allowed to burn coal. Now that that has been banned the air has improved. It's still not the cleanest however due to the car fumes and the carbon emissions from the coal-fired plants on the outskirts of the city. On the bright side, I went back there this year and I felt the air had improved.

It shouldnt affect the Olympics because the government has promised to curtail traffic volume during the games as well as shutting down the big plants that use coal and spew out carbon emissions.

yes, air pollution is BIG problem in Beijing. And the opening ceremony is 8 Aug 8pm right in the middle of Summer heat. For your info, the Asian Games in 1990 in Beijing is held in Sept and the heat is very hot, now imagine 882008, what is the temperature going to be light for all the sportsmans and woman in all outdoor events.

Solution, the govt of Beijing will closed all building construction sites within the 6th Ring Road, All offices and schools will also be closed to relieved traffic. All traffic leading to event venue will be closed to all public vehicle unless you have a vehicular pass. Non Beijing-registered cars are allowed into Beijing. Then you have an Olympic Games.

Let the Games begin

Yes but apparantly all the factories in and near Beijing will be closing down soon to clear the air in time for the Olympics. The process takes a whole year and they'll be fired up just after I'm sure. I am going in 3 weeks' time so I shall be able to tell you then!

Yes. My daughter visited there for the Chinese New Year and she said the smog was very bad. Also, there is an ecological problem going on there. She tells me that the Gobi desert is rapidly expanding due to global climate change and is sending a lot of dust into Beijing. She describes it as quite a crisis over there...of course, we in North America have heard little or nothing about it....

beijing and about 99% of the other large cities in china are insanely polluted. for air pollution, there are days you can't see across the street and if you think the air is safe on 'clear' days then think again. there are loads of lung-jamming cancer causing particles such as asbestos that are always present in the air. cancer rates are at an all time high in china. good luck with that.

Very serious. When I went there for a vacation, I really saw how bad the air pollution was. I can't imagine living there . Xiamen is still the best place in China, it's the cleanest and safest place to be in.
