I was there twice, and it seemed perfectly natural to shake hands: "Hello, nice to meet you." or "Hi, I'm so-and-so." No one seemed weirded out. It's not a stupid question. It's best to ask because the simplest things to one person can be highly offensive in another country!

It's not a stupid question. Everyone should be aware of some of the background of the symbolic gestures used in everyday life. It's another form of communication and can easily be misinterpreted. The handshake is an extension of the salute - the salute was used by knights in ancient times to indicate - "I am revealing my identity and therefore pose you no threat...". The handshake indicates that "I am not carrying a weapon...".
The modern day handshake is just a formal / polite way of saying hello in a quick and business like manner. It may be used informally between friends and several adaptations of the standard handshake exist. It should be firm, but not bonecrushingly so.
Yes, I do think that the American handshake means the same as the English handshake - after all you probably got it from us in the first place :p
Hope this helps

Some times it means just hello.
Or sometime it can mean you want to intimidate them and your shaking there hand to show you dont mind showing how tough you are "phisically" but still not beating them up.
England in the "not so posh places" does the second one apply.

Its roots are the same in both countries. Most people carried a weapon in their right hand if they meant to fight. Extending the empty right hand is a form of telling the other person you mean no harm or I want to be friendly.
