It does hurt. But not as bad as what everyone says. The ouline hurts the worse and the shading part doesn't hurt at all. I have one on my lower back. When the artist did the outline it felt like a razor blade was digging into my skin, especially when he got toward my sides. The shading just felt like he was taking a pencil and pushing hard on my skin moving back and forth. Just close your eyes and bear. Hey if you can have kids and not have a problem going through birth, then you can definately stand getting a tattoo. Good luck.

Yes. It is painful. I have two tattoos on my lower stomach. (So obviously not enough to stop me!)
The closer to the bone you have them the more likely it is to hurt.
Mine are just black ink with a black outline. It is the outline that usually hurts the most.
Your friend describing the pain as a sort of scraping is quite accurate it is not a sharp pain but a relentless throb. Certainly not nice and after a while it can be too much. Just make sure the person that is doing it is aware that it is your first time and that you are nervous.
I would think that if you have had children that it is not going to be any where near as painful as that though!

Tattoos to me are more of an annoyance than a pain, in fact I have slept through a few of mine. If you have ever had a catscratch then you already have a mild idea of how a tattoo will feel.
Just keep in mind each person feels pain differently so what one person may tell you, might not hold true for 50 other people. Don't psyche yourself up with "this is going to hurt" as it will only intensify the pain... DO psych yourself up with "this isn't going to be bad, i really want this, it's worth it" etc and you'll have pre-programmed your brain to feel less pain. Yes this trick does work, I have all my piercing clients do it and have never had bad feedback on it! ;)

yes it hurts. But not as bad as all that. It depends too on where you are getting it. Anyplace that has little fat, like the back of your hand or foot hurts. Anyplace that has "baby skin" like on the inside of your upper arm hurts more. The areas on the outside of your arm feel like a reall bad sunburn when it is being done. I have several and each one was different. If you cry easily over scrapes and small cuts. It's probably not for you. If you get one, remember it is permanent and make sure it's one you would want 20 years from now.

First off- ALL TATTOOS HURT.
How much they hurt just depends on your threshold of pain. A tattoo that I don't even notice, might make you pass out.
Also- if your too worried about that pain, consider getting a temporary tattoo. they probably don't hurt. and they are only a quarter, out of those little red machines at wal-mart!
If the pain is enough to make you reconsider getting a tattoo, then maybe your not ready for the tattoo.
But yes- they all hurt.

I freaked out to the point of almost passing out before I got my tattoo... I got my first one when I was 18, less than a month away from my 19th birthday because I was so nervous and got so worked up over it.
I got mine on my boob... and it didnt hurt. Some places with more bone, like the ankle do hurt more. But really dont work yourself up so much because its not no where near as bad as you are thinking it up to be. Lolz... I got that one and ever since I have been dieing to get another one! :-)
Good Luck!

Honestly, yes. I have four tattoos- only one is visible (even with a swimsuit on). Yes, of course it hurts, the artist uses a needle, or several needles to inject ink under your skin, so, no, it's not going to be painless. I think it hurts most when they continually wipe the blood, and extra ink across the open wound.
Of course, you've had kids, so, I can promise you it's no more painful than giving birth. (I have four kids, as well.)

it's not painful enough to be freaking out. Some people actually like the feeling of getting a tattoo. I was prepared for pain also but was very surprised at how little it actually hurt.

Its not that painful to the point of over worrying yourself over it. I have 2 tats... my lower back wasnt that bad, but the one on my hip was like a lit cigarette being put out on my skin when it went over the bone. The skinnier you are the more it hurts, thats for sure. I wouldnt stress over it. Just make sure you get something you really love.

It is completely normal to be nervous before getting your first tattoo since you have no idea what to expect. You'll be fine. Yes it hurts a bit but it's not unbearable. Remember, you can always tell your artist you need a break.
My lower back one wasn't that bad compared to my spine. Knowing childbirth breathing comes in handy :)
