i have a lazy eye all it means is that you have a weak muscle in your eye and sometimes it just floats where it wants to be

when most patients talk about "lazy eye" they are usually referring to AMBLYOPIA, which is reduced visual acuity in one or both eyes from lack of proper retinal/visual development.

there are 2 *main* types (there are other types such as "toxic" amblyopia but they are not very common. below are the two most common types)

1) refractive amblyopia: this usually is caused by a large prescription or a large difference in Rx between the 2 eyes. there is no surgery for this type. treatment in children is glasses/contacts and "patching", sometimes atropine eyedrops

2) strabismic amblyopia: this is what the other posters are talking about. its when one eye has a "tropia" or does not align accurately with the other one. usually this is what you are seeing if you look at someone and they look like one of their eyes is pointing in a totally different direction than the other one. the treatments include strabismus surgery (to make the eye that points in a weird direction point back to straight ahead like the other eye), glasses/contacts and also sometimers patching/atropine. some forms of strabismus can be corrected with glasses only (accommodative esotropia) and do not need surgery. in fact, IMO surgery is sometimes contraindicated in accommodative esotropia.

all of these conditions need to be followed closely by an optometrist or in the surgical cases a pediatric ophthalmologist

a lazy eye is an eye that has one of the movement muscles less coordinated with the other. it can be slow to responding and so it is called a 'lazy eye'. It appears as though people with lazy eyes are cross eyed however there are treatments for it nowadays in the form of sugery.

It means that when you look to the right or left, one eye is either slower to follow or it doesn't "point" in the same direction as the other eye. It is fixable. There are non surgical ways to try first. See you eye doc.
