Vedic philosophy revolves round singularity of God. There is no mention of plurality of God in Vedas. Vedic religion is pure unadulterated Monotheism. According to Hoy Vedas, God is one, not many :
Verily He is one
Single, indivisible, supreme reality.
- Atharva Veda 13/4/20
He is the sole sovereign
Of the universe.
- Rig Veda 6/36/4
He is one, unparalleled
Through His wondrous, mighty
And formidable laws and deeds.
- Rig Veda 8/1/27
There is only One
Who ought to be adored
By the people.
- Atharva Veda 2/2/1
O friends,
Adore none else but Providence
Who is supreme bestower of bliss
And thus thou wilt not suffer;
Eulogise Him in congregation
And sing songs of His glory repeatedly
- Sam Veda 242
God is singular, but his names are plural. All the epithets mentioned in Holy Vedas are ascribed to one God, who is Creator of the cosmos. Shiva, Shankara, Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh, Ganesh, Indra, Mitra, Varuna, Agni, Yama etc. are the epithets of one Supreme Being, who is formless, featureless, birthless and bodiless. He is unborn, eternal, immortal and everlasting. He has no agents, no intermediaries, no representatives, no incarnations and no partners. He has neither father, nor mother. He has neither wife, nor sons, nor daughters. He has no attachment. But He is Benevolent Father of all his children, and imparts equal love impartially to all his creatures. He is kind to all, cruel to, none. His first name is Om. But He is evoked and adored by several other names which are written in Vedas
He is One Brahma
The Creator of the cosmos
Who pervades and protects
And enlightens aft beings
He is One Supreme Entity
Whom sages call by various names
Such as Indra, the glorious
Mitra, the benign friend
Varuna, the greatest, the noblest
Agni, the resplendent, the bright
Yama, the dispenser of justice
Matarishwa, the almighty.
- Rig Veda 1/164/46
Thou art Lord of lords.
- Rig Veda 1/94/13
God does not have face, form, features, signs and symbols. He has no body. He is formless, featureless and bodiless. He is birthless and deathless. When He does not take birth, He cannot assume body. He cannot be seen, He can be felt. Hence no picture or portrait, idol or statue of God can be made.
God has no image.
- Yajur Veda 32/3
I hope these will help you
Still I ll tell you something from my heart.
We have different forms Gods because the Sanatan Dharam is not restricting any one, they can worship any form of God at any time of the year and any day. There nothing like Sunday or Friday in other religions.
You do it as per your ease.

We have many elements on earth. We have many relatives inside family,-father,mother,aunt,uncle,grand parents etc.
As we see nature externally and family internally Hindus have many gods.
A supplementary to original question,pl.
If there is only one single God as pronounced proudly by some religions, is that God similar to a human with sensory organs? Is that God, He or She?
When God is imitated /represented as a human being what difference it makes whether it is one or many? Both are just imaginations.

In Hindu people did not give many god, they knew how the creation was organized, and they also knew that they are not the only ones living in this universe.
So called Hinduism is not created, it is inherited form the ever existing religion, called Sanatana Darhma, Which will manifest on earth and other places of universe, during its own span of time.
These many gods have Order in place, and they form a team taking care of all activities of maintainance of this universe, including daily chores, till annihilation and cycling.
Please let me know if you are speaking abuot specific order, i can be more specific.

Why do christians have the trinity. Either both Christianity and Hinduism are BOTH polytheistic religions, or BOTH are monotheistic religions, as Hindu's believe that their gods are all part of a single entity, just as the christians believe.

We believe in many Gods because we believe that God exists in everything, even in the transient and everything exists in God.
It isnt a closed religion, every individual has his/her choice to follow the God he/she likes.
We believe what every be the God you follow, you should follow with devotion to realise the ultimate Truth/Reality which is actually infinite.
Hindu Gods are a finite human perceivable Deity of the infinite and cannot be fully understood Ultimate reality by the human mind and heart.

The many Gods of Hindus are ONE. Different incarnations of the same God, have different significance, and Lord appears in different forms for His devotees, as He is so kind, whenever His devotees prayed for Him, He came for them.......

Hindu people consider every element and things that are not natural or which helps them as gods.
But consider this, christians have, father, son, holy spirit, saints (hundreds of them), mother mary, infant jesus, etc. etc.
Muslims have allah and innumerable saints as well and they also pray to all the dead ancestors.
When you compare the above religions the hindus are far better, because they only worship the supernatural.

Short and simple answer:
Hindus do not have many Gods but many forms of God. The supreme power is referred to as "Nirguna Brahman".That power is worshiped in the different forms by dfferent people.
That's what the vedas say. But sadly there are lots of misconceptions.

Gods are the manifestartions of Self in Hinduism.Hinduism actually worships self.SOHAM (I am He) is considered as The God.Note that God is not given a gender and can be any.(He is used as direct tranlation in English. But there is a neutral pronoun used in Indian languages) God is considered to be inside us itself. If our feet touches someone, we do a pranam as we do to gods. The various gods for various events/objects are the various facets of us humans. For eg Goddess Durga has manifestations of a housewife, a mother, a warrior, fierce fighter, a wife, she herself is laxmi (god of wealth) and saraswati(god of knowledge) and at the same time she depicts rage, insanityl and kaam(sexuality) as Kali herself!!!(things considered as evil in christianity bound by ten commandments). So Durga can be very much yet another woman!!
If you see that way Vedic Hinduism doenst have clear cut do's and dont's as in other religions. It cannot be preached but it has to be felt and realised.

god appears in the form of his devotee's perception of him.
during ancient times people would depicted him as such forms thus resulting in such appearances.
Through time, due to blind beliefs, people believed that god truly is of those forms.
God is merely the energy that exists in and around us. Energy can be converted to anything, even matter
