As a fulltime Firefighter/Paramedic and a part-time fuel delivery driver, I have to say smoking is around a gas station pisses me off more than anything. Not only is it dangerous, it is downright stupid. The smoker is putting everyone in the vincinity at risk. Our drivers are trained not to deliver if someone is smoking and just call the police. However, in the rare instance that we are not able to do so, we can use the necessary force needed to difuse the situation and relieve the risk.
pie-man, if a bucket is filled with gasoline and a cigarette or lit match is dropped into it, there is a window right in the center where it will drop right into the gas and extinguish. Gasoline has a specific gravity higher than 1, making it heaving than air. Because of this, the fumes (which is the flammable part of gas) rise up against the sides of the bucket, down the exterior sides, and lay low to the ground, eventually dissipating.

Ever since my kids were born if they were in the car with me I would either pay at the pump or pay a little extra to have the gas pumped for me so I could be in the car with them. I am sorry to say that I don't trust anybody when it comes to my kids. I would love to live in a world where I didn't have to worry about what could happen to my kids if I let them out of my sight but I don't think that world exists. These days I get my gas pumped in the morning after I drop my kids off at school and while my kids are now 10 and almost 6 I still wouldn't leave them in the car alone.

Yeah it is true, the fumes are the most explosive.
Another safety tip to think about. This happens to more women than men, but static electricity can set off the fumes too, starting a fire at the pumps.
Touch your vehicle on a metal area to help ground out the static electicity that can build up from your clothes.
What I do is touch the vehicle first and the pump handle while pulling it out of its cradle. Then I start to pump gas. It gives me a double ground if static electricity has built up on me. A ground through the vehicle and again through the pump.

The explosive part of gasoline are the fumes. Anyone smoking around a gas station while someone is pumping gas is asking for trouble. You may do it a hundred times but eventually your luck will run out.

The attendant is correct. Gasoline by itself in liquid state is not the flamable part. It's the vapor in the air that is flamable.
With your passenger smoking, the flames can potentially ignite the vapors. It's all a matter of concentration of vapors.
In the US all states have laws regarding smoking around gasoline pumps for a reason, to prevent stupid people from blowing themselves and others up.

Not nearly as dangerous as it is stupid. Why would you risk it? Talking on a cell phone and pumping gas is also dangerous. If you have a gas hot water heater in your garage, you should never store gasoline in the garage because the vapors can escape from the container find the flame and Boom goes the house.
