For an every week driver it's Ricky Rudd, he will be 52 on September 12th. Partial schedule, Bill Elliot is older than Ricky and will be 53 on October 8th. The oldest guy to attempt a race is James Hylton. Morgan Shepard does not compete even when he makes a race, sorry but it is true. He has hardly even been entered in cup races this year but has been active in the Busch series, I will give you that. Dale Jarrett is also in the over 50 club, he will be 52 in November.

Red Farmer 70+ still has NASCAR license though now he runs dirt tracks.
James Hylton who is 70 has attempted toQuailify for Daytona this year.
Morgan Sheppard Runs Busch and attempts cuphe is in his 60's.
and activeliy Ricky Rudd is 52.

Hylton tried to race this year, but he didn't really "almost make" the Daytona 500. He wasn't that close even.
As to the oldest that regularly tries, its Morgan Shepard, he's 65 and still runs regularly in the Busch Series.

James Hylton attempted to make the DAYTONA 500 this year, and he is scheduled to attempt to make the PEPSI 400 @ Daytona on July 7th. He is currently 72 years old.
