If the toaster has a polarized plug and if the outlet it's plugged into is wired correctly and if the toaster designer put the switch on the hot line (the standard practice), then the risk is small. If you contact the coils, the toaster might make toast out of you.
Does that happen often? No, but it happens. The Consumer Products Safety Commission estimates that on average 15 people are electrocuted in the U.S. annually due to faulty or misused home electrical appliances, including toasters.

When I was 10 I unpluged the wron appliance by mistake and then put a knife in the toaster to get the toast out. I got electrocuted and I could not get off for ages I finally flicked my hand up and It released throwing me 2 metres across the room. When I came round I didn't know where I was and I was very ill. I never told my parents what happened but my parents took me to the doctor as I was so ill, the doctor said I had a blown ear drum and mis diagnosed me with scarlet fever. I am very lucky to be alive.

Yes. Unplug it first. How hard is that?
You don't hear about toaster related deaths because people listen to their mothers, and have common sense. You don't hear about 1000's of deaths from sticking a fork in the electrical socket either, but it can happen. Why tempt fate?

RE:
Can you really get electrocuted if you stick a knife or fork in the toaster to get your toast out?
Mom always told me you could. If it's true, I don't understand why we don't hear of thousands of toaster-related deaths.

Yes, if you touch a live electric wire w/ a metal utensil, of which many are running thru a toaster! Use wood or plastic!

Sure can -- it may be a zap that definitely gets your
attention, but is also the potential that you could be
electrocuted.
