Yes, there are natural alternatives to depression, but I haven't found anything that can affect a serious depression like antidepressants. To treat my depression, and I have been successfully treated, took a multidisciplinary approach. I couldn't take Prozac type drugs, so it was discovered that a combination of Effexor, Seroquel, and Trazadone was effective. In addition, I work out three times a week vigorously. That raises my serotonin and nor epinephrine levels as well and I get the added benefit of being a good looking 42-year old. And on top of being effective in pain control and keeping Vasculitis under control, I take 70 mg. a day of Percocet and 20mg. a day of Prednisone. I also take a drug called Cyproheptadine, which removes the emotional attachment from a memory and that helps. There are so many things you can do, natural and pharmaceutical, to alleviate your depression. But what works for me and others might not work for you. That's why you have a doctor and you should both create a trust with one another. I know that when I see my psychiatrist every four months or when I see my GP weekly, that they have my health and well being in mind, and we have learned to trust each other.
I've also learned that some side effects, difficult to deal with at first, can and will go away after using them a while. Good luck and IM me if I'm on line if you want to talk.

Talk to your doctor about herbal supplements and vitamins that may help with serotonin levels (the chemical in your brain that determines your level of happiness; a lack of serotonin is the source of depression generally). Also, I'm sure people have already told you how exercise, especially running and yoga, improves serotonin levels as well.
This site has a great article about alternatives:

An often overlooked avenue for assisting with depression is exercise. Though depression makes one feel tired, just trying to exercise a little bit each day can assist tremendously.

Exercise regularly and eat the right foods, esp fruit and veggies. Sounds boring but the truth is that 80-90% of your serotonin lives in your digestive tract, so if your intestines are unhappy, your head will be too.

St. John's Wort works for some people. I wouldn't recommend it because it gave me stomach aches.
There are a lot of medications for depression, tell your doctor about it and maybe you can be put on something else.
