It depends on a lot of different things. A brand new marine who is single with no dependents (wife, kids, etc) is required to live in the barracks with the other single soldiers until he either gets married or reaches a certain rank (usually SGT's, E-5, and above are permitted to live off post). Senior NCO's and officers are automatically permitted to live off post because they make more money and are usually more responsible than an 18-year-old private.

It's for the marine's benefit that he lives on post until they reach a certain rank. They have a place to live for free, they eat for free, very few bills to pay etc. Plus they learn more about the marine's by being around it 24/7. It would be a tragedy for a new 18 year old that has never been on his own to get put off post and have to fend for him or herself. They hardly make any money; usually don't have a car, etc. It would be setting them up for failure.

The bottom line is that it depends on the individual's rank, whether they have any dependents, and of course it is at the discretion of the commander and 1st sergeant or Command Sergeant Major. Living off post is a privilege that can be revoked!

Yes you can. I was in the Marine corp and proud of it. When I lived in California my job was at camp Pendleton but I lived in escondido. You also will qualify for more pay not that it is alot but it will help. The Marine corp tells you when you need to be back on base to go to work. They have the right to make you stay on base though and that did happen a few times while I was in.

Housing is payed for on base for anyone in the military. It's your choice whether you want to move off base or not, and if you do, prices tend to shoot a little higher.

I thought he left to go to law school with his parents? You said in some posts you've been together for 2, 3, and 4 years.

You say lots of conflicting things in your posts.

YOU can live outside a military post. If he is joining - they may not let him due to his rank.

single servicemembers must be a certain paygrade before they are given permission to reside anywhere but the Barracks. married personnel will get permission to live off base if they have Acompanied orders.

Why are you asking this again?

It depends, no one can answer your question without more information. For one, if he's single...it depends on his rank. Plus, each base & command are different.
