is the service pack 2 merely a downloadable file from windows? i mean, if i buy windows xp pro with sp1, if i download sp2 will it be as complete as windows xps with the sp2 cd with them?

Yes it will be as complete as those Windows XPs which come with SP2 . Just log on to
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx
and download.

You can either download SP2 or order it on a cd from Microsoft. It contains all of the upgrades through Feb. of 2006. All other upgrades will have to be downloaded and installed through the Windows upgrade site. Click Start/All Programs. Up in the top section of "All Programs" is the link to "Windows Update.

After you have installed SP2 you will need to go back to the Update site and download the rest of the updates. Be advised, there are allot of them.

You can download SP2 from Microsoft, although it's a large download. But yes, it's as complete as buying a copy with SP2 already.
