Assuming you're talking about the Iranians taking over the American Embassy in Tehran and holding those people hostage for over a year, it was in January 1981, not 1980, when the hostage-takers released their captives.

It was 1981. The election was held in 1980, but Reagan wasn't sworn into office until 1981. The hostages were released at the very moment that he was taking the Oath of Office.
