that some schools won't allow children to bring in a "sweet treat" on their birthday?

I don't think it's a question of fair or unfair. They can do what they want. However, what is their reasoning? Are they concerned about allergies? Can some kids not afford to bring in treats? Are they concerned about the nutrition of the snacks? I'd want to know that before I commented more.

Unfortantly things have changed a lot over the years. This is one of them. Today there are a lot of kids with allergies. My son can die if he eats peanuts for example. So I've noticed a lot of kids have this allergy and it's very dangerous. I think that's part of the reason. Another reason is they don't want the kids hyper during the day after a big sugar intake. Also if it's a homemade treat some schools say no. My son's school doesn't allow home made treats because a few years back some kids got food poisioning because the parents used old eggs. A bunch of kids got seriously ill.

I think it is ridiculous! That is a special day for the child and they should be allowed to bring a treat. My sister subs at a school that only allows 3 children to bring sweat treats in. The other children in the class must bring healthy treats. Don't get me wrong, I think a healthy well balanced diet is important, but these are special times of the year not every day.

In addition someone mentioned "fat kids", these children are not fat from school parties and birthdays. They are over weight because their parents are feeding them the wrong things at home and they are not getting enough physical activity.

Perhaps, but....... maybe a treat that isn't "sweet" could be allowed- fresh or dried fruit (little boxes of raisins, apples, vacuum packed fruit cups, etc....). If the policy is in effect from day 1, the kid's won't expect any treats, and therefore won't feel left out. The world isn't the same as it used to be- we are more conscious of health issues, and therefore we can't compare grade school now to how it was when we were kids.

I don't see what's possibly unfair about that. It may or may not be a great idea, but so long as they treat everyone the same, I fail to see how it can be that unfair.

Can you clarify what you mean by "bring in a 'sweet treat'"? You mean for the child, with her lunch? Or for the class? Or what?

Life isn't fair.

Save the treats for home. There are too many children today who are suffering from diabetes, obesity and food allergies. Your "sweet treat" could be life threatening for some children in the class. Let your kid celebrate at home and leave school for LEARNING not eating.

Yes I do.

The reason being is that some kids might not be able to eat sweets or they are allergic to them. I had a friend growing up who was allergic to chocolate. Every time he came to a bday party his mom would send him with a twinkie or something so they he wouldn't feel left out. Also, especially at a younger age, they might not know they can't eat this or that and end up getting sick from eating the treat.

no I don't think its 'not fair'. the school is just trying to minimize any potential for problems--allergies to various things (nuts, etc)--people stealing your treat--people who have treats when others don't, or moms (dads?) who might make/get treats for the whole class..

at the end of the day, its no big deal. There are plenty of other things that schools do that aren't fair, this one isn't a big one.

Unfortunately, life isn't always fair. You have to abide by rules in society, whteher you like them or not. Maybe you could bring this up to your teacher directly, but make sure you are nice about it and don't lose your temper.

with so many fat kids out there it is fair - treats shouldnt always have to be "sweet" - blueberrys, strawberries, watermellon - are all wonderful treats too...

its a school -- which is supposed to be a LEARNING environment - not a place for cakes....
