My boyfriend's sister is getting married in August. The wedding is in the evening and is formal. I asked what I should wear and his mom said a long dress would be appropriate. I found a dress I love and bought it. I took it to his house to show his mom and get approval. His mom, the bride and the maid of honor all said the dress is fine. However, the other day the bridesmaids dresses came in and my dress seems far more formal than they are! I am really worried now because I do not want to outshine anyone and I certainly don't want to stick out too much. Despite the approval I got of my dress, I feel as though I should choose somehting less formal. My dress is a strapless, long, rose colored satin gown by Jessica McClintock. The bridesmaid dresses are celery-hued organza with gathered necklines and wide straps. Should I go with my gut and get a new dress or go with the crowd and wear it? Should I voice my concern to his mother? What would you do??
Thanks!

Also, I can shorten it, yes. I forgot to mention that. One of the biggest benefits of having a mother who makes wedding gowns is the free alterations!

Since the bride and maid of honor have already passed approval, wear that rose-colored satin and shine away! I'm sure you'll look lovely. Don't complicate matters with a lot of second guessing.

I would personally get something a little less fancy. It's really nice! I just think it would be too formal from the sounds of it. I also have a great long dress that I would love to wear to a formal wedding, but so far all the weddings I've been to since buying the dress are less formal than the dress - it's quite embarrassing to stand out like that, IMO! I would purchase another dress and save this for something else.

Talk to the mom and MOH again, or ask the bride.
I would go with your gut, if you feel it will outshine the bridesmaids get another dress.
BTW do you have a link to the picture of the dress? Or could you put it up on the net (imageshack hosts pics)? Which one is it on this site?

Well, that depends on what they're wearing. Are they wearing actual bridesmaids dresses or just dresses from the shelf of any store? If they're wearing formal bridesmaid dresses then I'm sure you'll be fine. You wont stick out that much.
I think you're just concerned that you'll look prettier than them, and I think you will with the description of their dresses. lol Doesnt sound like something I'd want to wear. If they all said Its fine, then they're not concerned about you looking more formal or better than them, so I'd wear it.

Can you shorten the dress without ruining it, or can you afford another one? I agree, you should go with your gut feeling on this. It's their wedding, but you need to be true to your own sensibilities, and if your dress seems more formal than the bridesmaids, that's just your sense of taste and individuality. Do what you feel is the right thing, and it WILL be!

The hardest person for a woman to listen to is herself. Your instincts are telling you not to wear this dress, listen to yourself.
I like the idea of shortening the dress, that will take alot of the formalness away, can you make it a tea length dress? That length is really in right now so it wont look odd. I would take it to a tailor and see what they can do for it, it will cost alot less than buying a whole new dress.

If you are going to be uncomfortable, return the dress and get something a bit more unformal. Sounds like you might be uncomfortable with the fact that you dress is fancier and you want to make sure you are comfortable and look great so you can enjoy the night. Good luck!

If the invite states formal or black tie then that dress is appropriate. You did get approval so you should wear it. You love the dress why change it now
