Hi-

I am wondering about signs for first female heat. I know the commons ones are blood and enlarged vulva. My puppy, who is 5 months 1 week old, does not have any of those, but when I came home last night, there was a really bad and distinct smell. I think it was some sort of a secretion, but when I cleaned it, it didnt seem like blood. It was really clear, but it might have been blood. So does this mean she is going through her first heat?

Also, I have a male puppy which is 4 1/2 months old. Can he get her pregnant right now?

I know I should get her spayed, and I have made the appt for friday. I just want to know if they will be ok until then (it is really hard for me to seperate them).

sounds like your puppy released her anal glands. Is it a fishy smell? if yes then definitely anal gland.

The heat cycle generally starts with bright red blood that turns brownish-to-clear. This is when the female is going to be receptive to the male and most likely to conceive. If you have any concerns that she might be in heat SEPARATE them by any means necessary. Have them take turns in a crate or in a closed room. You can put a pair of little boy's underwear on her to help keep them from breeding. Put the underwear on her with the fly upwards so you can poke her tail through the fly. This may help if they accidentally get together, but don't rely on it. It WILL keep floors and furniture protected from her secretions. The male is perfectly capable of impregnating the female at this age.

The other thing is to be sure she isn't having some type of infection, which could be a simple urinary tract infection or deadly pyometra. A ***** in heat will have an odor, but it won't be foul like an infection would. Take her temperature. If it is over 102 degrees Fahrenheit, get her to the vet before her spay appointment..

Sometimes, female dogs do have a distinct smell. Not even that but have some discharge yellowish). If is on heat, you can see the enlarge of vulva (for 1 - 3 days, depends). Then follow by blood. Some will have cramps & doesn't allow you to touch their butts.

My first dog has her period at aged 11 - 12 motnhs (pinscher). Beagle has hers at 8 - 9 months & Huskies is the same. 5 months, I doubt it. You can check with your vet.

If you do not intend to get your female dog pregnant, spayed as early as possible cos as age grows, your dog will take longer period to heal. I only came to know lately why female dog needs to spay as after 5 years later, chances of getting womb cancer is higher. Hope it helps.

The clear stuff is most likely her anal glands. Good for you getting her spayed Friday! With the great health benefits for spaying/neutering I hope you are getting the male done soon as well...

Really clear is not usually blood. She could have expressed her anal glands.

Does your male puppy have an appointment to get neutered?

I think they should be okay until Friday.

Good luck!

She's not in heat. And males usually can't impregnate females until after they reach sexual maturity (after their eyeteeth come in). If you don't want to have babies, now is a good time to spay/neuter. Do the male before he matures and starts lifting his leg.

At thje time of your doggies 1st and 2d warmth cycle she continues to be becoming and if she have been to alter into pregnant the nutrients that she needs to maintain her very own growth and maintainance could be going to her domestic canines. it might desire to stunt her growth besides as make for a confusing transport. think of of it in terms of folk... purely as a results of fact a woman starts off her menstral cycle on the age of 12 does not advise it quite is healthful for her to get pregnant. provide your lab a while to mature and then while you're particularly set on breeding her communicate on your vet (or your brother) and communicate approximately all the opportunities of issues.
