This is a good questions because exercising is as much mental as it is physical.
I go to the gym everyday. I haven't missed a day in about a year and a half. What keeps me going? Knowing that today I am making another step towards a better body and a healthy life. Everyday I am better than yesterday. Before you know it, days become weeks, weeks become months, and so on.
It helps to listen to music that gets you going. Be in your own little world at the gym. Block out everyone's grunting and groaning. For me that gets annoying.
I consider the gym "me" time. This is the one time where I can focus on myself completely and not be considered selfish. I'm not sure if that made sense.
Another thing that motivates me is the membership cost. I think about the money I am investing and I want to get my full monies worth. With any investment I make, I want to ensure I am profitable.

The key to any exercise regime IS being motivated enough to keep with it. I've found that exercising EVERY day is the quickest way to lose that motivation. Doing your routine 3 or 4 times a week has a couple of advantages. First, you have days off to look forward to. When you're sweaty and breathing hard and your muscles are burning, you're able to say "At least I don't have to do this again tomorrow". It makes getting throught it easier. Second, and this is especially true if you are doing heavy exercises like weight training, the days off give your body a chance to incorporate the gains you've made as well as to recover from the stress you're putting on it. I've been on exercise regimes my whole adult life (37 years) and this is what has worked for me. Good luck.

It's hard to stay motivated, when you don't seem to see any changes in yourself. That's because we look at ourselves every day (probably more than once while exercising!). So take a photo of yourself, then train for a few weeks and take another picture. You will see a definite difference, and this should help you keep motivated!!

It's all about visualizing the end results and the self-confidence that comes with them. Focus on the future and the present will take care of itself. Focus on the present, and you'll always be a step behind.

you have to have both short and long term goals.

most want to decrease body fat and gain some muscle. this is not easily done at the same time. your training program should consist of various phases which focus on a specific goal for a set amount of time

Think about how good you'll look or even go so far as to make a mental picture of someone you would like to look like and keep that in mind.
