Funny thing is, it has more to do with the person than the drug. If you're predisposed with an addictive personality, you'll find the three equally difficult. However, there seems to be a deeper physiological response to alcohol than to smoking.

Smoking includes a hand-to-mouth habit that's hard to break in addition to the nicotine.

Mary Jane, with more of a psychological response than a physical one, saps addicts of their ambitions, so when the addict gets a swift kick in the butt, they'll usually drop it. It's really not that addictive, but the habit--and the permeating lifestyle that accompanies it--is hard to shake.

People usually require some sort of "wake-up call" to break the habit of each of the three. It took an Act of God to get my attention. Having a near-death experience usually does the trick!

So, in conclusion, I'd rank them (in order of difficulty to break): alcohol, nicotine, marijuana.

I don't believe they cmpare (in most people).

If someone is a heavy drinker, but uses marijuana only once a month, then I'd wager that person woul find it easier to quit pot than to quit drinking.

It depends on the level of the addiction to the individual substance in the individual person.

I played around with tobacco while in school. Usually only when I was also drinking. I never did it often enough to develop addicitve-style craving- and when I got bored with the smell and the mess, I never picked it up again.

Alcohol contain nicotine which is a stimulant that affects our brain nerves and these nerves produce certain hormones that deals with our mental stress
In simpler words its good to have to have alcohol in small amounts but since it contains nicotine people get easily addicted to it and consider it as the best way to deal with their tensions
The same concept could follow to Cigarettes and Marijuana
These things relaxes and energises one thats why it gets hard for a person to give up these things
But as a whole for those people who are not addicted to these stuff and want to deal with their stress please find some other option except addiction....your life would get much worse than what it is right now....

Cigarettes. Nicotine stimulates the dopamine pathways in the brain with greatest efficiency. Nicotine also has the strongest withdrawal symptoms, which makes going back to using it that much sweeter.

Alcohol only stimulates the dopamine reward pathway during the first half hour of the first drink. The rest of the happy effects come from who you are with, but do you ever notice how people sometimes get sad when drinking? That means it's not addicting. You can, however, develop alcohol dependency, which is a whole different story, but still fairly easy to kick.

Marijuana simply causes a relaxed state of mind with very mild effects on the dopamine reward system. People do it mainly to unwind, feel slightly happy, and to get away from themselves.

All three of these are addictive substances. Most people need help to give them up. If this is your case, find a group and work within it. Group interaction is important, since it lets the person know he/she is not alone in the struggle. As for which is "harder" to give up, this would depend on each individual. In any case, all addictions are hard to give up.

Son gave up cigarettes, alcohol and weed all at the same time

He said that when you give up one addiction, you'll make the other addictions worse
so that is why he gave them all up at the same time

He also said, when the person is truly ready to give something up .. there is no extreme difficulty

he still goes to his AA meetings every so often

I believe it depends on a persons character. I am an x smoker I wanted to quit got it in my head and did. I quit 12 years ago, no pills, no patches no anything cold turkey n it worked for me. Now if you pose this question to an addict their answer will be on the complete opposite end of the spectrum.

Cigarettes are far more addictive than alcohol.

Marijuana has not been found to cause physical dependence, some studies have indicated psychological addiction, similar to giving up watching TV.

I'd probably say either alcohol or cigarettes. Marijuana isn't nearly as addicting as the other two, I know this from first-hand expirience too.
