My vet recommends feeding your dog some human food with a few rules. It goes in the dogs food dish. This way he does not learn to beg from the table. If you feed your dog human food deduct that amount of food from his normal dog food ratio so that you are not overfeeding him and making him fat. The reason is sometime in your dogs life someone is going to give him something to eat. If his system is not use to human food it can cause an upset - diarrhea and/or vomitting. If you have fed him some human food off and on through out his life his system will be use to it and when that someone slips him a hotdog while you are at a picnic for a special treat, then his system can handle it and you won't have a sick dog. Your dog is part of your family isn't he? Doesn't he deserve a special treat once in awhile? When you give him that special treat don't you just love that SMILE he gets on his face? Much better to have him use to it and not make him sick when he gets it.

"People food" should not be a major part of the dog's diet. Unless you are following a raw food program as mentioned above, or cooking from Dr. Pitcairn's book. Also, be careful to not let him 'train' you - that is, don't let him skip eating his own food so that you'll take pity upon him and give him treats. If he won't eat his own dog food, don't give him anything until his next meal time.
Please avoid onions, chocolate, macadamia nuts, avocado, and the other foods listed on:

Feeding people food is fine, in fact, Oprah's vet recommended that raw is the best for dogs... If you can't bring yourself to hand your dog pieces of raw chicken, then... the next best is home cooked. You'd need to research to find out what is best, the amounts, etc...
Next, is a really high quality, grain free canned/wet- canned has more real meat if you get a high quality 95% meat one.
Last is a really high quality, grain free kibble... You can easily find different brands/different kinds by searching google: dog + food + grain free
Oh, contrary to popular belief- feeding kibble doesn't keep the teeth clean (anymore than eating hard cookies/crackers keeps ours clean- LOL!) and feeding all canned is fine as long as it is really high quality...
The only way to keep your dog's teeth cleaned is to brush them daily, or to feed raw meaty bones. www.rawmeatybones.com
Good luck.

I strongly discourage you from feeding people food. If you never start, you won't have a dog that begs at the dinner table or steals food from plates. Also dog food is formulated to be balanced and healthy, if you substitute people food you are ruining the balance. There are many health problems that would stem from eating people food from pancreatititis, gastroenteritis, to just plain obesity.

Just don't feed your dogs with chocolates. Is really really bad for your dog. Feeding chocolate can kill your dog.
