We're making our invitation and I was wondering...

Is it half past five in the afternoon or evening?

& is half past five spelled that way or are there hyphens?

it depends on how formal the event is. you can just say five-thirty in the afternoon or half past five in the afternoon.

5:30 is still afternoon. Evening officially begins at 6:00! You don't use hyphens for "half past five" so you could say "half past five in the afternoon" or "5:30 in the afternoon." (I like the first one - a little less casual.)

It is half past five in the evening.
There is no need for hyphens and after 5pm, it's evening. Afternoon is between 12pm and 5pm. I hope this helps.

half past five occurs both in the morning and in the early evening. You should use pm.

We used 5 o'clock sunset instead of evening or afternoon.
