You can buy anything in the duty free shop and take it back aboard the aircraft. However you need to know what the rules are for New Zealand concerning how much and what you can bring back. Doesn't do any good to buy something or too much of something only to pay a duty to New Zealand when you get home.

Yes, if you're in an international departures area with duty-free shops, and you have a boarding pass for a flight that day to a destination outside of the country, then you can purchase duty-free. If not already, familiarize yourself with duty-free allowances for New Zealand.

here is a heads-up: not all shop within the international terminal tend to be "duty free." there are plenty of regular high-end shop set up within the airport that are also located past security that posed as eye candy shops. look for the "DFS" stores and not ur coach, gucci, or the swiss brand name luggage stores. (sighs; sighs; sighs)
