8,000:1 is DYNAMIC contrast
1,200:1 is true contrast

Dynamic contrast = 4 to 5 times "true contrast"

Samsung is using dynamic contrast a lot.

Don't just trust numbers. Go to the store and judge by yourself.
Try to also see the LCD screen at about 20-45 degrees angle, you may be surprised....

Technically the higher the contrast ratio the better the picture contrast will look. However dont get bogged down on specs, see the picture for yourselves and then make a decision. I have seen plasmas with a contrast ratio of only 3000:1 and they give far superior picture depth and contrast than LCD's that have a ratio of 12000:1.

Many of these "specs" are maximums or under ideal conditions where other manufacturers will give you average or standard contrast ratios. You can usually trust that the cheaper and low-end brands will inflate their specs to attract those looking at the numbers and not the picture.

Trust your eyes - most people prefer LCD to plasma as the resolution is higher and the colors more natural - I prefer Sony and Toshiba, but you should decide what you like vs. what you can afford.
