is he a fallen angel? why?

Well the traditional Christian belief is that SATAN was an angel created to kind of be God's right hand man, he was in charge of all the rest of the angels. Then he got a power trip, decided that God had a monopoly on this whole supreme being thing and set himself up as the antagonist, taking some other angels with him.

EDIT: I have to debunk the ridiculous claim made above me. Absolutely no one thinks that Satan is Gabrielle. His "given" name according to the Bible is Lucifer. Gabrielle is a different angel.

This is the Muslim version, so hold on!

He was a Jinn which is a ghostly-type being made from smokeless fire. Due to his piety and worship he had joined the rank of the angels. It was said that there was nowhere on earth that he hadn't prostrated.

When God created man, he ordered the angels to prostrate to him, this was a prostration of respect, not a prostration of worship. So Satan was with the angels at this time and he refused he said, "you made him from clay and you made me from fire." Satan was then thrown out of heaven due to his disobedience and Satan swore to misguide man.

This event has many benefits that can be taken from it. In the Muslim tradition we do not accept the fact that angels have their own will, they do as they are commanded to by God. Jinn on the other hand do have the ability to obey or disobey, hence satans disobedience.

At the same time we know that evil is under Gods control and is a recompense for the evil that man wills.

I hope this answers your question, please contact me if I have confused you.

Having just read all the other posts, the Muslim version makes a lot of sense.

Satan is typically confused with Lucifer. But I think I know which story you are asking about.

What happened was once man was greated by God he told all of the heavenly host to bend knee to man. Lucifer said No and asked "Why should a being of fire bend knee to a being of clay"

Lucifer then took about 1/3 of the angles and tried to take over the throne of heaven. In the end his forces lost and where expunged from heaven. But as we can see in the book of Job at lest lucifer can still enter heaven.

He is a fallen angel cuz he ate God's Oreos when he wasn't looking... In the hopes he wouldn't find out.... But he did and alas, Satan and God were friends no more.

From the Jewish POV: Satan is just another angel. The hebrew word "Satan" literally means accusser- and he is the accusser at the heavenly trial after you die. Judaism doe snot have Satan as being in opposition to God, or of ruling hell- in Judaism only humans have free will, and thus it would be impossible for one fo them to rebel, plus, Judaism does not have the Christian concept of hell in it- so there is nowhere for an oppossing figure to be ruling! God is everywherre, rules everything and has no rivals or equals.

NOnonono Gabriel is still an archangel. His(Satan) name was Lucifer. There is a great book out there called "Angels" by Dr. Billy Graham

Yes, Satan is a fallen angel. His name used to be Lucifer until he became prideful and claimed to be God's equal

Isaiah 14:12-14 says, "How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!

For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:

I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High."

Lucifer claimed to be as powerful as God which is why he was kicked out of heaven.

The real story about Satan is that he, like the god he supposedly rejected is imaginary; a fiction written by men based very closely on the story of Horus (most christian mythology is actually the myths of Horus rebadged to meet Pauline sensibilities).

Satan lived in Heaven and was very influential. Before the Earth was formed a plan was being made to see how we would come here to get a body and return to Heaven. Satan wanted to be the one to bring us ALL back by taking away our Free Agency so that we would do all that we were told to do. But Satan also wanted God's power and Glory for himself. This plan was rejected by God in favor of a plan proposed by Jesus where Jesus would give His life as payment for our sins. So Satan rebelled and was cast out of Heaven..along with about 1/3 of the Spirit Children of God...

We are among the other 2/3 Spirits of God who lived in Heaven.. and we are sent here to Earth to gain the gift of a Physical body.. and to be tested to see if we will do all that God commands...

Lucifer/Satan KNOWS where we came from but he wants us to be as miserable as he.. so he temps us and tries to deceive us.. perhaps little things at first.. then greater things.. until at some point we feel no longer worthy to be saved by Jesus...

Jesus also lived in Heaven with Heavenly Father.. and He was chosen to come to this world to pay for our sins.. because Jesus loves us so much that He volunteered to pay the price of our weaknesses and sins.
