does anybody know how do employment agencies work? do they actually help you find a job? trying to help BF...?

Yes, they try to match the job openings of their clients to the job seekers who come in the door. Sometimes they are low pay temporary jobs, but it depends on the agency. There's no harm in trying it. If you don't want the job they offer, just say no.
