The answer to your question is yes--eating a couple of poppy seed rolls, bagels, etc., can cause you to fail a routine drug test. This news will produce one of two reactions, depending on whether you're a law-abiding citizen or a drug fiend:
1. Panic (if law-abiding citizen): "I could lose my job by eating breakfast!"
2. Elation (if drug fiend): "I could keep my job by claiming I ate breakfast!"

Jamie tried this on Mythbusters. He tried many foods with poppy seeds and kept coming up negative on the drug test. Apparently the level of opiate a bagel puts in your blood is well below the level which makes you fail a drug test.

Yes: it is possible. Opiates can be detected in the urine up to 48 hours after eating a single poppy seed bagel.

It happens, so it's best to avoid them if you're at risk for being tested. On the other hand, using them as a defense when you're busted is not likely to work. They'll just do a GLC confirmation and still bust you, and then they'll come down on you harder for lying about it.
