I guessing at your question. Are yo asking is it right that we can do something illegal and confess it to our priest, yet he can not tell anyone what we did?

If that is the question then, no they are not misused, many other people can not tell, counselor, therapist, AA meetings and the like . but they are not up for discussion, they are never questioned.

I think it was originally a way to keep tabs on the community as well as help to relieve some of the guilt that the catholics were feeling because they believed they were sinners. It seems that it was a misuse from the beginning. I'm not sure what has changed since then, unless the priest taking confession is telling others about what they're hearing. That would be a misuse, certainly.

Sure, any good thing can be misused....but keep inmind that people who abuse the sacrament ( like by saying"I;m going to sin, but I'll go to confesion") are guilty of VERY serious sin.

Used correctly, Confession is a wonderful way to keep your life centered on God. It offers the Lord's forgiveness here and now in a way that can truly be felt- like a weight lifted from your shoulders. It is a clean slate- a chance to start fresh...you can't beat that!

In what way is the Church allegedly misusing confessions? You must give a detailed example(s), otherwise this question has no meaning.

Misused in what way? You need to clarify your question with more information.

I am Catholic, I go to confession...as far as I know neither I, nor the priest, have ever misued the sacrament of repentance.

If by misused, you mean not found in the Bible, then the answer is yes.

Here is God’s way: first, for the alien sinner when in Acts 2, the believing Jews cried out, ". . . ‘what shall we do?’ Then Peter said to them, ‘Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit’ " (Acts 2:37, 38). No command here to confess to any priest or any other man for the purpose of obtaining absolution.

Now concerning God’s way for those in the church: when Simon, after his baptism as recorded in Acts 8, had committed a grievous sin, Peter directed him as follows: ". . . Repent there-fore of this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you . . ." (Acts 8:21-23). Peter did not direct him to confess his sins to a priest in order to obtain absolution. James, in giving instructions to those in the church, said, "Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray one another, that you may be healed" (James 5:16). My friends, that states, "Confess your faults one to another." It does not say to a priest.

A priest has absolutely no authority nor power to forgive sins.

As someone who hears confessions all of the time, I can tell you that I hold nothing more sacred than the seal of the confessional.

Anything that is "misused" can't be "right" - so you answered your own question.

If you want to be more specific, maybe we could address it further.
