"You can check out any time you'd like but you can never leave." --Eagles

The type of situations I had in mind with this question were: memories, your impact on others, the footsteps you leave in the sand. Impermanence--permanence--you've checked out of left a scene but what memories or images of you are left behind and never leave the lives of others.

When you check out do you leave lasting impressions? Do you transform lives? Do you leave a trail of smiles and warm hearts?

The line can be examined outside of the song :-)

Wow. We talk about verses taken out of context all the time but I never thought I'd see it done to Hotel California.

Once you are saved you are always saved, your sins are forgiven forever and the Holy Spirit lives in you forever. You can do nothing to lose your salvation because you have not earned it by your works, but receive it by grace by Jesus' death on the cross. As saints saved by grace we have the abundance of grace and God's righteousness to conquer sin and reign in life. We reign by being in Jesus and walking in the Spirit. We check out by being out of grace and God's righteousness by keeping ourselves out of Jesus and not walking in the Spirit. We can never leave we are always saved, we checkout when we do not enjoy the benefits of our salvation by not being in Jesus.

This line is really just a play on words and in any other context is not logical .

Do you understand what "Hotel California" is about? It's not escapism, it's about a religious cult.

To me it has to do with being high on something like an escape from reality.
