A walk or picnic in the countryside. They get fresh air and exercise and if you teach them to really look around them they will get some educational benefit as well. A lot of kids these days don't really understand simple things like how things grow and what they need to grow. Animal and insect life abound at the moment and are very easy to spot. I don't know if they still make the 'I Spy' books for children but they were always good for increasing a childs interest in things and keeping them occupied in a good way. Whatever you do, have fun and enjoy your childs company.

Where are you? UK? County? If you are local to durham I could suggest some places
i have 2 sisters 1 bro who all have children - my son is oldest (now 18) down to a 3yr old. Last summer the whole family went out for the day. Find a proper picnic place, often have shallow streams, loads of fields to play on. All we took (except food!) was a ball, frisbee, fishing net (£1.50 can be used again) bucket - to put the fish in!
Everyone including parents and grandparents enjoyed themselves - weather wasnt fantastic but it didnt rain.
Cost us food which we would have had to have had anyway.
In Newcastle there is a fantastic musuem called The Discovery Musuem - its brilliant and aimed at children . There might be somewhere like it near you.
Also the beach is always a favourite, work with him or compete (in fun!) to build the best sandcastle. Seeing you join will make him feel great.

The Museum because im sure he would love to see the dinosaurs and all that type of thing
The beach to go swimming or play volleyball etc,
The park to walk the dog or play some footie or a picnic,
IKEA because it can be fun in there and go have a small meal in the cafe,
Cosmeston Lakes because it has a play area in with pirate ships to climb about on and swings etc along with forests to have a stroll in,
roath park, its quite cheap to go on the boats, its something like £2.50 for half an hour on the lake and it has a huuuuuge park,
Public swimming pools, in pentwn there is pentwn lesuire centre and its cheap and has a small slide and a massive snake slide,
you could go for bbqs in portkerry park, it is beautiful there, theres a park, huge fields, a running river with a bridge over it where you go into a small area for bbqs and about a 5minute walk away over the stones is a beautiful beach with little caves in to paddle.
have fun on your day out.

The library has a children's room with plenty of free activities such as story hour and crafting projects. Also the books he can pick out. Try the kids cook book section and then you can go shopping and make some meals together. Your local park district will also have plenty of summer programs, like swimming or sports, that are fairly priced. Good luck and have fun, they are only young once.

Let him run free in an open park. Take a bike or a football. My 9 year old has always loved the chance to let loose instead of being cooped up inside.

try taking him to museums and gallerys ,and look out for local attractions that are held for summer in parks etc , even to the train station or local airport if you live near one, use your imagination , im sure he will have a bigger one than you and make it fun for you too, go and feed animals at parks ,at 7 most things are fun so set off to the beach, hills , a day out is a day out and better than being stuck in ,,,hope you succeed in finding somewhere

A walk around the park, feeding the ducks/squirrels, kicking a ball, swings and roundabouts etc. Simple pleasures, good fresh air.

Take him fishing. Tackle for fishing can cost as little as $10-15 total and you can use it over and over again. That'll give him something he can't get anywhere else in the world. He'll always remember his first fish and you'll have that memory to share forever.
