In most states, but not all, liability insurance is required. If it is not in your state, it is optional.

If you live in a state without mandatory insurance, you can register and drive a car. If you go into a state with mandatory insurance, you must have the insurance to legally drive on the roads of that state. Even if your car is legally tagged, they can still charge you with a crime if you do not have proof of insurance!!

In states with a mandatory insurance law, you have the option of not driving, or of buying insurance!!

In most states you must be insured to get license plates. If you
are stopped by any law officer you must show proof of insurance. This can happen at a road check even though you have done nothing wrong. I know people lie when getting plates.
or they purchase insurance long enough to get plates then drop the insurance. That's why people buy insurance against the
uninsured or under insured. My advise is to get minimum liability coverage insurance.
