My mother is helping a stray cat with a litter of five kittens, about 5 or 6 weeks old. The cat is partially tame. We are not certain if the cat has an infection. Additionally, the cat has been in the company of at least one unneutered male cat. We have antibiotics suitable for feline administration, but are uncertain whether they can be given to the cat if she is pregnant, again. We may take her to the vet, although that might be difficult due to the fact that she is not totally tame, and in a large dog cage with her kittens. The cage would be quite difficult to transport with the cat and her kittens. Does anyone know if Clavomox (Amoxicillin) is O.K. to give to a cat, if she may be pregnant, again. Yes, we can consut a vet, and I did read the info. re. Clavomox not being thoroughly tested in pregnancy. Wondering if anyone else has had experience with this? The cat will be spayed, but we need to know what to do in the mean time.

I have not, but will be honest. Until you get the go ahead from a qualified vet or vet tech do not take the chance! Everything the mom ingests is excreted to the kittens so it could have deadly results. Please do not go off of others opinions or experiences. Just because someone has done this before and it was safe for them does not guarantee it is safe for your cat. If your cat is suffering from mastitis one thing you can do is apply a warm cloth to the breast or breasts and encourage the kittens to nurse and wean them off gradually so the milk production slowly tapers off. Depending on how long it has been since she stopped nursing them is a factor on the chance that she is pregnant again. If she has had no access to the outdoors or cried in a howling way she is not pregnant. Cats usually do not go into heat again until they have completely weaned the current litter. So you should not have a reason to worry.
Good luck!

Your best bet is to take that cat to the vet. You shouldn't diagnose or administer Rx medications to anybody (animals included.) without a physician's consultation.

Clavomox is an amoxycillin for dogs and cats, but I don't know if you should give it to a nursing mother cat.
