Everything I can find says either 4 cylinder or V-6 but the one I bought used has a straight 6. I don't know how I can get parts for it if I don't know how much displacement there is.

The Jeep Cherokee, produced from 1984 through the late 1990's, was available with either an inline 4 cylinder or a 4.0 litre inline 6 cylinder ("straight six"). It was only available with a V-6 til about 1987, using the 2.8 litre from General Motors. Early Grand Cherokees also used the 4.0 Inline 6, and so did the TJ/YJ/Wrangler.
The 2.8 GM V-6 put out about 110 hp, so when Jeep introduced it's own 4.0 litre about 1987 or 1988 with 173 hp, it was considered really powerful. The Comanche pickup was a veritable hotrod with this engine!

1988 to 1990 had a 4.0 I-6 based on '70's 258ci I-6 design

1991 on had a HO 4.0 that **seriously** took the motor the next step.

The 80's V-6 was awful, imho.

Most parts below the head are pretty universal 1988 - on.

You can get parts anywhere. All you need is the year of your Jeep. Awesome motor, easier to work on, but things on the front of the motor (like the water pump) are a @#$%.

Note for any motorhead reading this - the 258's cranks will go in the newer 4.0's and are much beefier.

Most of the above answers are correct in that the Chevrolet V-6, 2.8 liter was used until 1987 when the STRAIGHT six four liter came out. It WAS NOT BASED completely on the 258 as the heads were different, bore and stroke. There are similarities, but the CRANK WILL NOT interchange as stated, unless you change the pistons as a minimum and most ususally the rods due to a 1/2" stroke difference!! The head changed several times over the years due to emmissions, but the biggest change was at 1991 with better breathing and so the HO engine.
Now,,,UH..about that 258 crank...uh...1/2" more stroke..special pistons,,bigger yet valves..cam..NOT CRANE!!..throttle body...larger..natually.....0.060" over bore...4.7 liter and up to 50% more HP and 60% more torque at rear wheels..PER DYNO!!
After over 200,000 miles HAD to rebuild it...just added a little here and there!
