first off, ford man jumps in with little data. on the ford taurus, you have to make sure that your motor is the same as the other car. 3.0, 3.8, twin cam, or single. and the 96 is an axod-e, the 98 may be a ax4n, or an ax4s. you need to match the tags on the car. good luck

it depends, ford used more then one engine and transaxle, it is best to get the tag numbers and have a salvage yard do a part interchange on them. as for it being a DIY job, if you had to ask you are not equiped to do it, it is a 6 ot 7 hour job for an expierenced tech with the right equipment.

Auto Recyclers use a crossover book to tell them what fits on what.
I would say not becouse of the electronics envolved.
An automatic transmission replacement job requires a lift, so it is not a job one can do at home.

even if it fits physically, the electronics will be way different, so no it wont work. even if it would, not a job for the driveway.
