It is only a mile one way. The fair is £1.80 return BUT the fine for travelling without a ticket is £20. There NEVER seems to be any inspectors on the route I use (I am only on the train for ONE stop) I make this journey 5 times a week which is £9. That is a masisive £468 a year. What would you do. Cheers. And before anyone posts comments like. You b+stard HOW DARE YOU. etc etc etc. Imagine if that was the worst thing that happened in the world. Cheers.

Train prices are extorshinate, absolutely ridiculous!! i say DO IT! as long as there arent any gates that you have to put the ticket through at the stop. Just hide in the loo's if there is a inspector, they never knock and ask!! x x x

Live dangerously and save money whilst doing it!! x

I would just pay the fare as you will not know when an inspector will turn up. Also remember that the drivers/guard can ask for a ticket at any point and have the power to arrest you (like the rest of us rail employees) if you do not have a ticket.
Also remember that a ticket is your insurance, so if you are taken ill on the light railway (or mainline railway) you do not have to pay for the costs to get an ambulance to where the train is, otherwise if you do not have a ticket and you are taken ill you have to pay, and it would be in the £1000 mark!
SO Just pay, it better & if anything was to happen you would not get a criminal record or have to pay extra bills!

When my other half was based in Frimley, I used to travel to see him straight from work on a Fri so by the time I got to the station, the train would just be leaving so I would jump on it and forget to buy a ticket and if there was an inspector on the train, I would buy a ticket then but to be honest, most of those trips, nearly every weekend, cost me nothing! I would have to buy an underground ticket to get through the barriers but that was it! Although, this was a while ago, so not sure how strict they are now! Just try it and if someone says anything, feign innocence and buy one there and then! Although, I have heard that a yearly ticket is cheaper.

Just go for it if you want a bit of adventure, get away with it for six months and save £200+. Good luck.
But what will happen is that each unpaid journey will become harder and harder, because you know the odds of getting caught is becoming lesser and lesser and possibly the punishment dealt out greater and greater, until you'll feel sick taking another chance and eventually you'll lose your cool completely and you'll become a law abiding citizen like the rest of the gerbils.

Hmmmm on our local rail you can buy your ticket on the train off the inspector, if he doesnt get round to checking your ticket its not your fault, you just got a free ride

I guess its all down to your conscience. I certainly have travelled without my ticket being checked however thats not to say I didnt have one if asked. I guess its all down to honesty isnt it really. If you owned a buisness and everyone or certianly a number of people decided to take advantage etc you wouldnt be too impressed.
In some way you can look at it as theft...in fact...thats really what it is isnt it?

going to agree with joolz on that one but some of the suggestions in this thread are ridicoulous

1. search your pockets- this is whats known as the money jig we know you ain't got no money as soon as you start doing that so there's no way were going to be leninet with you

2. Fake your name and address - Nowadays we have police back up who can easily trace anmes and address without id's

3. risk it till you get caught - fair point but as joolz says the penalty starts at £20 but then can esculate to Thousands of pounds and even imprisionment

4: say you were in a rush : this is normaly plausable however we can remember faces and some of us can just be plain evil and say you could have broughtyour ticket and then got the next one!

Basically it's up to if you are that desperate to save £1.80 do it i would say the risk of getting caught is small especially if you only go one stop but there's still a risk

The chances are, the stations you used are equipped with CCTV, and the train or tram may have it is well.

They authorities could compile a case of fraud against you, and you could face a hefty fine, prison and a criminal record (good for your career?).

All for the sake of £1.80.

Besides, stealing (for that's what it is) is immoral and wrong.

Don't lower yourself to that level.

To be fair mate, if you can get away with it, then do it...

BUT... the £20 fine aint the worst of it.... If they suspect you do it regularly they can and will check stations CCTV and do you for full fare evading which carries imprisonment and a huge fine as a consequence!

50% each start way but bad way! £20 minus £1.80
£1.80=£468
£20 =£5200
