My company managers advertised a job externally without telling anyone and without offering it internally. It would have simply been a promotion for a few of us, and we are all qualified and able to do the job.

Speak to your manager. But if they are looking outside it means that they have already decided that there is no proper candidate currently withthe company

Unfortunately it all depends on the policies of the company...some like to promote from within , some don't !

If this attitude is typical of you employer's , the best advice would be to find another !

There is no law to say they have to. Perhaps they want some fresh 'blood' in, untainted from previous years at the company. Sometimes this is best
