I would not only get a second opinion, I'd be finding another vet. If your vet said to put the pup to sleep ONLY because it is albino, the answer would be NO. I have NEVER heard of such a thing!!! Go to this site http://whitedobes.doberinfo.com/ Find the paragraphs headings Albinism in other breeds & Does albinism affect health.

If your pup is in pain or ill and the vet cannot treat, get a second opinion first. But to put a dog to sleep just because she is an albino, would be very unkind.
I've heard of albino python and nobody said anything about taking its life.
The owner must have deliberately abandon it.
Only thing I know about being an albino is not to be exposed to the sun as with human beings.
Hope things turn out well for you and your pup.

Some people find it so easy to say
"put it to sleep"
"its just a dog"
or
"you can always get another one"

This vet upsets me. If your dog is perfectly healthy, get him a clean bill of health, then never see that first vet again ! His solution is to get rid of the animal rather than give it a chance at a full life. Albino's in any animal are usually in good health its just that they're a different color. Altho some like deer, become more easier of a prey animal than a normal deer. I think you should keep it out of too much sun, so it does't hurt its eyes. they're eyes are more sensitive to the light. Not sure if this is the same as it is for rabbits but, if an albino rabbit is in direct sun alot, it can develope skin cancer. Something to think about. Albino animal photo link below

I found an albino puppy about 20 years ago. I kept her and she was a good dog. She did have a few health issues - she was deaf for one. Due to her being deaf, I had to GENTLY shake her in order to wake her up. There were other issues but she was worth it.

On another topic though, I do think you should make a bit of an effort to find your dogs previous owners. Call the humane society and the dog warden and give them a description of the dog and some contact information for yourself. Also, put up a flyer or two with a digital picture of the dog in the general area where you found the dog.

Best wishes to you and your new friend Isis.

I would get a second opinion, but I also would ask the vet for more explanation. Are there more health issues here than just albinism? A lot of times albinos have multiple problems.

When the first opinion is death, a second opinion couldn't be worse! Albinos on average will have multiple problems caused by their condion. Example: deaf, blind, allergies, etc (it would be a VERY long list) .... It sounds like the vet is just assuming that the dog has these issues. I would go somewhere where they test for those possible problems, and go from there on your decision to euthanize.

If I were in your shoes, I would seek that second opinion.

How dare he!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Spay her, spray her, wrap her up and take her home!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know a teeny *bit* about albinos, but I can help you if you need more information. I reccomend you spay her though to stop the continuation of the albinoism, its not a good thing to have or encourage. But killing it because it was born that way isnt right.
The only problem with albinos is that they need to stay out of the sun, and when they are out they need sun screen.
I have seen a albino great Dane, and Doberman at our dog beach and both were happy and beautiful, the owners just keep sunscreen on them. I could help you out if you want with the health needs, im sure there are tons of sites that could help.
Check her for deafness, and blindness.
There is NOTHING wrong with her, she is just different, and needs a bit of care. What breed is she?? or looks like. Could you send me a picture??
Please, keep her.
I am trying to find things sites on it, its kinda hard though. I found some stuff even though I just types in albinism in dogs, it comes up with alot of doberman, boxer, and greatdane.

This a something I found that helsp you understand, and detirmine an albino.

I will try and find something about care.

Definately get a second opinion. No dog deserves to be put to sleep just because it was born a little differently as far as I know the only thing wrong with albino dogs is that they tend to be more suseptible to blindness.

I have never heard of euthanizing a dog or cat because they are albino. Is this the only reason?

Yes, I think you need a second opinion.

Also, please let all area vet clinics and animal shelters know you have found this puppy, someone may be missing it.

I would get a second opinion for sure!!!!

has your vet given you any reasons in particular for putting the pup to sleep? for example will the costs of care be expensive if you keep her? is she in pain? will she not be able to lead a normal doggy life?
