Soul, the real you, is not a physical entity; therefore It is not bound by time or space. It is made from the same fabric as God.
While on earth, Soul wears a physical garment called human body (or any other living organism) which we can see, feel and hear. But Soul Itself cannot be located with physical senses. It uses our mind to interact with the rest of our body and the outside world.
Soul drops the physical body when it expires (death) and takes on another garment in another world, and is free to move about in the various worlds, including coming back to earth in another incarnation.

From the vedic(hindu) perspective the Soul is a Non-Material substance which pervades the entire body with consiousness resides in the region of the heart. The Vedas explains that because of that powerful source, everything works like a machine within the body. Without the Soul, the Body is actually dead matter.

You are actually not this Body. You are a Spirit Soul entrapped in this gross material body. This is reality. Everyone are spirit soul. There is no such thing as Hindu,Muslim or Christian, these are names given to identify the Material body which is affected by the gross senses which is also affected by enviromental circumstances. The Soul is your Real Self which is not affected. We are all spirit soul. As Krishna says in the Bhagavad Gita...

The humble sages, by virtue of true knowledge, see with equal vision a learned and gentle brāhmaṇa, a cow, an elephant, a dog and a dog-eater.(Bhagavad Gita 5.18)

A Brahmin(Hindu Sage) sees everyone with a equal vision which includes all livin beings. Because he sees the Soul and not the outer material body.

Let the Bhagavad Gita explains it....

As the embodied soul continuously passes, in this body, from boyhood to youth to old age, the soul similarly passes into another body at death. A sober person is not bewildered by such a change.(Bhagavad Gita 2.13)

After this body of ours is uselss, the Soul simply accepts a new body depending on the law of material nature which gives a particular type of senses and a particular type of body based on the actions of the person in his previous life.

If a person in his live always thinks about eating and where to find good food, means his consiousness is no different from an animal who is always looking for food. So if thruout his life he remains in this consiousness, he will get a particular body for him to enjoy his eating habits...Maybe a Body of a Pig suit him fine with that respect.

If person has his consiousness for having sex all day...finding partners to have sex...having sex on the streets, parks etc...means he is no difference from a Dog or a Baboon...At death such a person might get a material body of a Baboon and now he can have sex the whole day without worries.

Destination for the next body depends a lot on your consiousness and actions which determines what type of body one gets.

Does Man have an immortal soul, purely spiritual, immaterial reality, separate from the ‘body? Not according to the Christian Bible. Note that after God started man breathing “the man came to be a living soul.” So the man was a soul, just as a man who becomes a doctor is a doctor. (1 Cor. 15:45) Since the human soul is man himself, then it cannot be some shadowy thing that merely inhabits the body or that can exist apart from the person. In harmony with this fact, the Bible makes plain that the human soul possesses physical qualities. For example, the Bible speaks of the soul’s desiring physical food, saying: “Your soul craves to eat meat.” (Deut. 12:20; see also Leviticus 17:12.) It says, too, that souls have blood traveling through their veins, for it speaks of “the blood of the souls of the poor innocents.” (Jer. 2:34, AV) So, your soul is really you, with all your physical and mental qualities.—Prov. 2:10. So, just as we speak of one’s losing his life, we can speak of his losing his soul. Jesus said: “For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Matt. 16:26, AV) When Rachel had trouble in giving birth to Benjamin, her soul (or life as a soul) went out from her and she died. (Gen. 35:16-19) She ceased to be a living person and became a corpse. And when the prophet Elijah performed a miracle in connection with a dead child, the child’s soul (or life as a soul) came back into him and “he came to life.” He was no longer a corpse but was again a living soul.—1 Ki. 17:17-23. Since the soul is the person himself, what happens to a soul at death? The Bible is very clear in stating that the soul is subject to death, saying: “The soul that is sinning—it itself will die.” (Ezek. 18:4, 20) The apostle Peter quoted from the writings of Moses concerning the future Prophet Jesus, saying: “Indeed, any soul that does not listen to that Prophet will be completely destroyed from among the people.”—Acts 3:23. Much of the misunderstanding about death has been due to the confusion in many persons’ minds as to the meaning of “soul” and “spirit.” The Bible shows they are not the same.

THe soul is located in the lower areas of the colon. When you die, when your body releases that final HUGE fart, that's actually your soul leaving. At least that's what I think...

spirit is located in the third eye (inbetween eyebrows bit up a little bit). when we die we go back to a higher dimension/realm, whatever you wanna call it (apparently there are like 9 other dimesions, this is second from the bottom, i.e. almost the mythical hell), at least we all have something to look forward to ay! hee hee!
