The Argentine Government hasn't renounced its claim to sovereignty over the Falkland Islands. It did, however, agree that any future attempted solutions would be managed through diplomatic negotiations, using the appropriate international forums as necessary (ie, the UN).
The Falklands is a tricky one. In geo-political terms, it clearly forms a physical part of Argentina. However, as one previous answer has noted, the majority of the population have consistently stated their wish to remain under UK sovereignty. It became a UK territory in the days of the British Empire, and it serves no real benefit to the UK (Particularly since 1982, when the financial cost of maintaining a military presecne there has been significant). It remains a UK territory primarily through the 'accident' of the islanders' expressed wish to remain UK dependents.
It's worth noting that the UK and Argentina were involved in prolonged negotiations over the sovereignty of the Falklands from 1965. The British Government's intention was to return the islands to Argentina, once an acceptable solution had been found to the question of the islanders and their natural desire for safeguards. Various compromise solutions were offered - including ones that involved the payment of large sums to the islanders if they agreed to renounce their UK citizenship - but these all foundered on the rock of the islanders' objections. Hence, after a series of provocative 'incidents' and stand-offs between 1976 and 1980, Argentina invaded in 1982 - with results we all know.

Nobody knows, during the war they had air superiority of 20/1 in combat fast jets. We had no supersonic jets, only the harrier. Had they pushed ahead and sunk Either of the Aircraft carriers in the south atlantic at the time then we would have definatley lost.
The only reason we won the ground campaign is because we put all our elite forces into the fight, ie marines, para's, SAS/SBS.
The Argentinains were mostly teenage conscripts, but all of them were immensely brave, as were all the aircrews and naval forces.
It should have been an easy victory had the Argentine government followed through and held their nerve.
There are still tensions today about the Falklands. Lets hope the war never happens again.

They never have had 'sovereignity' over the Falklands per se, they had declared independence from Spain in 1815 and landed on the islands in the 1820's and notified whalers they were staking their claim. In 1825 they set up a small fishing port and penal colony. After a mutiny by Argentina colonists in late 1832, a British frigate arrived January 1, 1833 to retake the Islands and put it under British control by orders of the Crown and it has stayed in British hands since then.

They haven;t.
Argentina still claim sovereignty of the Islands, but until recently have vowed to reclaim them through political means rather than attempt force.
However with the present administration this may change, recently they have began to be more hard line in their views, it started with them charging fishing vessels an extra tax if they fish in Falkland waters, withdrawing from the Anglo / Argentine oil sharing deal, and increased incursions in to Falkland island territorial waters and air-space by Argentine vessels and aircraft.
However anyone worried about the implications of an Argentinian invasion should remember that Argentina is militarily weaker than in 1982 and the UK is far stronger and more capable today of mounting operations to liberate any future invasion. Since the end of the cold war the UK has changed it's forces from one designed for minimal global operations and concentration of forces to repel a soviet invasion, to one of only 2 countries in the world (the other being the US) officially able to mount and sustain several large forces overseas.

They didn't 'give up' sovreignty to the Falklands as they never had it.

The Falklands have been under British protection for a very long time. Their indepedence is recognised by the UN.The Argentinian dictatorship whipped up the excuse of getting back the Falklands which they never owned in the first place to draw attention away from their internal problems. The Islanders all want to be British.

they never had sovereignty in the first place, and if you go by the United Nations declaration of self-determination the Falklands Islands are British territory as the majority of people who reside there wish it to remain British territory. If you were to take a survey I think you would find its about 100% of the population want it to remain British territory!

I wasn't aware that they had. I believe they are still claiming sovereignty but are thinking about peaceful means this time after the thrashing they got when they invaded.

they didn't have sovereignty of the Falkland islands, they were trying to take it away from the British. We have a right to defend our own territories, and the Argentinians shouldn't have tried to take it away - the islanders WANTED to be under british rule.
