This is especially the case when I try to sleep. I always have the same song playing in my head over and over, and about a million random thoughts that I can't seem to clear. The harder I try the worse it gets. I never know what to do, so I just lie there and end up not getting any sleep. Sleeping pills only get me so far, and I become dependent on them if I take them too much.

First of all, I understand how you feel and I am sorry that you have to suffer through that. As a son of 24 years, I know how bad my parents suffered with that problem. After years and years of experimenting with solutions to this problem, I have discovered many solutions. The easiest is one is to consume 34 ounces of Jack Daniels in a 20 minute period. But make sure you don't have to drive for at least 2 hours. The second one has to deal with lots of morphine and/or blows to the head. I don't recommend getting that far, but that depends on how severe your sleeping disorder is. Good luck.

Actually, I do have an answer and I sleep quite well thank you. I used to have the same problem and I took several very specific steps to quiet an active mind. The first thing I did, and this is just what I did, was that I went on Seroquel, and it is a drug that worked for me. Although the drug is sedative taken at night, and that's what I started at was 300 mg. at night, it quieted my mind at least until I learned to take control of my mind.

The second thing I did was give myself a certain time of day in which to worry, and two hours before deciding to go to bed was not the time. Of course, I no longer complain or worry, but it helped me to make a choice not to worry before bedtime.

And the third and most important thing that I did (do) is to change my world on the outside by changing my world on the inside and let me explain...I watched a movie and read a book called, "The Secret," and the secret makes sense. It says that my thoughts are energy and that the universe gives me whatever I ask for and you can use the Secret to help you get to sleep. You say that you have, "a million random thoughts that I can't seem to clear," and that is your problem right there. You are focusing on clearing your thoughts, so you aren't clearing your thoughts. Your telling the universe, "I can't seem to clear my thoughts," and the universe is saying, "Your wish is my command." Instead, try to image yourself getting the deepest and most rested sleep possible. That's telling the universe, "I'm going to get a deepest sleep" and then you probably will. It may be just a suggestion, but it works for me. Like an author of "The Secret" said...whether it's being in debt or getting out of debt, if you focus on debt, the universe says, "Your wish is my command."

I also listen to new age music every night on a 30 minute timer and also have white noise playing from from a fan and a humidifier both. The white noise helps me to rest while I train my mind to sleep within a half hour of playing (the music). Then it becomes a habit. I hope some of these steps help you to sleep as well as I do every night.

Try seeing your family doctor and tell them your symptoms. If you have fast-rapid thoughts that are unstoppable, you might be experiencing hypomania. But don't believe me until you get some real diagnosis from your doctor. Your doctor can refer you to someone to investigate some more and ask you more questions about your thoughts.

You can listen with ear-phones to slow songs you like. Turn the TV on and put that on sleep. Watch the TV 'til you feel groggy. Buy CD's on how to relax "Feel the weight of your head slowly drifting into your pillow. Now relax your eyes and let them wander into space." etc. That actually worked for me. I used a casette player though so it would turn off by itself when it's done. It tells you how to relax each part of your body and half way done the tape, I've already knocked out.

Avoid coffee, because this enhances rapid thoughts.
Exercise, too. This will knock you out and help you relax.

I have the same problem with billions of different thoughts are in my head, its like I have ADD in my mind. What I learned to do is block thoughts in my mind or tell myself I will think/dwell on it later. When lying in bed not being able to sleep because of all the thoughts wandering around...ok I take some nyquil (bad idea though)

Try being more active throughout the day and lay off coffee/tea or any caffeine drink. When you go to bed, read a good book until you are sleepy. Night night, dont let the bedbugs bite zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Wait don't thumb me till you actually try this. I learned it in a class...........
Yes!! First lay down and get comfortable. Try to feel the tips of your fingers, relax your stomach, toes, just acknowledge all your most used parts and relax them then take several deep breath's in your nose & out of your mouth. It gets oxygen to the brain almost like a little ruse. I have to do that to relax myself and clear my head or I would never get to sleep. Just try it!

I used to do this too.The minute i would go to bed,all thoughts of the universe would bombard me!
You may have ADHD & need medication such as adderall.
My grandson has been on it for some yrs & he does well on it.
God healed me from this problem.I just let it go.
Every so often it happens, but not bad.
