My mom meant it as a joke, that she's charging us to live in her uterus.

Yep. OR, you can grow up and move out on your own.

I think every family is different. Honestly, $900 is a lot, maybe too much.

If the parents can afford not to charge rent, that's great. But, they should make sure their kid is working and saving money for their future.

If they can't afford to support them fully, then they should pay for some expenses. Maybe not rent, but I gave money to my mom money for groceries, cable bill, etc.

It depends on each family.

Right after graduating college is the worst time financially for a kid. They may not have a job, they will have student loans, etc. I think it's up to the family, with input from the kid, to discuss what they can afford to contribute to the family.

I think the parents should charge very minimal, so that the kids can save up for their own place. Paying $900 a month, isn't going to help you save much for your own future.

Oh, my!!! That would be such a crazy idea in this part of the world (south-Eastern Europe). Here parents are so sacrificial they would do anything for their children even when the "children" are way over 30. So only the idea of somebody taking money from their children if they live with them will set everybody into highly judgemental mood. I certainly wouldn't want rent (or at least wouldn't call it that). Would be nice if we shared bills and other expences, though. Could be very hard on parents if they had to pay for everything, especially when children are grown up and have a steady income of their own.

Someone mentioned their mother threatening to rent out their room when they went to college - well, mine actually did! During my 2nd year, that was it, my room was gone. Kind of funny, really. It was only on a temporary week by week basis, though.

When I graduated, I moved away straight away anyway to live with my boyfriend. I did briefly stay with my mother when things went wrong with the boyfriend, but that was for about 5 months, and I paid her a weekly amount for my keep. ($900 is a bit much, by the way). My amount was about $250 a month. It helped her, and meant I could still save what I earned in my job to afford to move out again.

The amount shouldn't be crippling like that, or else the kids will never be able to save up to move to a place of their own.

after college graduation? they need money for their higher education how a student can manage it? yes definitely if children not learning higher and doing service then we can thin about it. otherwise they need money for making business or set up industries in this also they required money at that crucial time how a parent can charge for rent? from different point of view a child can make good strong supportive emotions to his/r parent and good loving support is also necessary. but other side if parents doesn't have money to survive the family then it's a responsibility of children to think about it.

My mother took one third of my pay for board and lodging. After my traveling expenses, etc I didn't have much left.
I was much more generous with my own children, although they still gave me something towards their upkeep.
I actually left home because of my rent. i thought I might as well live on my own, without having to stick to the household rules. Which as I was 17, wasn't a good idea.

If the kids have the means I would agree they should pay rent or board or whatever.

I've got two that have stayed at home that I haven't charged rent because they don't have the income to pay it. I think charging rent is better for the child who can afford it, because it will encourage him or her to become more independent and eventually to go out on his or her own.

I'm sure if you are late or come up short they will forgive or see past it but c'mon give a little back. They paid for so much and just want to see their chicks leave the nest and try to make it on their own. Plus it's not cheap to feed a grown person or clean up after them.
Retirement is not cheap either

Your parents are right. No freeloading after college. Get a job and if you want to still live at home you have to pay rent. If you eat at home you need to pay for some of the groceries. If you do laundry at home, you should buy laundry detergent. Get it? No free rides.

I told my daughter that when she left for college we were going to rent out her room. (We didn't but it gave her something to think about.)

That's a bit much, but I believe in teaching my kids about the importance of working and paying bills. I charged my kids $20.00 per paycheck. My parents did the same to me. You gotta learn to pull you weight.
