the food absorbs and it takes longer to enter the blood stream

Speaking from experience I have found that food already in the stomach area absorbs the alcohol before it gets to the digestive system. Without this absorbtion the alcohol moves through the blood stream faster and that blood then travels to the nervous system faster thus causing the dizzy like feeling of being "drunk". Attempting to eat food AFTER alcohol intake does not take away the dizzy feeling and may have a tendency to make you want to drink more to wash down the food.

There are numerous factors that will affect how quickly alcohol is absorbed into your body. It is important to remember to eat before you drink as this will help slow down the absorption rate. It is also important for a woman to realize that even if she is the same height and weight as her male counterpart and they are matching drink for drink, she will always have a higher Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) at the end of the evening. The reason this is the case is women do not produce as much of the enzyme that breaks down alcohol. Women's alcohol absorption rates are also affected by birth control pills as well as their menstrual cycle

Weight - the higher your weight, the lower your Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) will be

Gender - Men produce more of the enzyme that breaks down alcohol

Food - the more food you eat, especially protein, before you drink, the lower your Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) will be

Emotional state - Alcohol is a depressant and will enhance your current emotional state. For example, if you are upset before you start drinking at the end of the night your mood will be lower than it was at the beginning of the evening

Drinking Rate - Chugging drinks and doing shots results in a large amount of alcohol entering your body in a short amount of time. Your body cannot process alcohol at a fast pace resulting in a higher BAC.

Alcohol is absorbed directly from the lining of the stomach. Food in the stomach absorbs and dilutes the alcohol thus slowing the rate of absorption into the bloodstream. The result is that you don't feel the effects as soon, but it lasts longer.

Because on an empty stomach, all your body has to metabolize is the alcohol, where as on a full stomach, a person has to metabolize the food first.

It hits your blood stream faster and in greater concentration. Proteins break down the toxic parts of the alcohol. Increased fluid intake will dillute it. Having extra ballast in your stomach will save the lining of your stomach from corrosive damage too.

With food in the stomach, it releases small ammounts of its contents into the other parts of the body, over a long period of time. However, with no food in the stomach it releases everything inside your stomach into other parts of the body.

So only small ammounts of alcohol can escape the stomach when it has food in there.
It has nothing to do with being soaked up by food.

because when peoples stomachs are full of food, it absorbs the alcohol before it reaches the bloodstream, which reduces the amount of alcohol in the blood, and limits the effects on the body.
