The oldest OS first! First install XP. After that, install VISTA.

VISTA will see that you alredy have an OS and ask you if you want to upgrade or create a dual boot.

You have to take care while installing
because Vista is latest software of Microsoft and when you are trying to install Vista on XP it will understand that you want to upgrade from XP to Vista but you have the option there to dual boot and it is better you installed Vista on Drive D if XP on Drive C. Also if you have some important file in your system take back up so that you will loose nothing if problem exist

Normally the better practice is to install the older OS first, then the newer one. The installation software will ask you if you want to replace the older OS or install the second one as a dual boot system.

I don't know if it's even possible to install an older OS when you already have the newer one installed, but a good technician should be able to tell you if it can be done and how to do it.

either is fine, install the OS where you want the boot manager installed first. Then install the other OS.

Also, just make sure you do have or get a boot manager allowing you to load XP and Vista, I'm sure you already have one.

It doesn't matter if you're going to be doing the formatting of the drives and setting the active partitions manually.
