When the jail or prison system is way to full of non violent people they have to look at what is in front of them so say a guy got 5 years and its 2 years into his time then he get a early release. If a guy is in for say 15 years then the jail or prison will get him in front of a judge or panel of parole and the person can be set free on a cut sentence for say giving up information or his reason for being there was so minor that his sentence was high because say he resisted arrest and a bit more time was added for that. Most times a cut or reduced sentence will be given in a offer before the judge rules on a sentence. So everything that is considered in a reduced or cut sentence is what the person is in for and how much time the person has either spent in jail or prison or how much time left needs to be served. it can get confusing in explaining all this but once you have seen it a few times to many you can tell what is what. My father is in law enforcement and I learned allot from him about this kind of stuff. So after all that it just boils down to how much time or time spent as well as the crime the person is in for.

I hope they are very careful when choosing the
prisoners to be released. It's all about over-
crowding, there is no room for people who
are waiting to be sentenced. And did I hear right this morning that the goverment actually
sold off a prison last year?
It's a sad time in the history of our country that
the criminal offences are on an all time high.

Hello,

(ANS) Frankly, there is no! difference in my opinion, the end result is obviously the same i.e. shorter prison sentences (shorter time locked up). But this is ALL about politics and the failure of the government to plan for future prison expansion. In other words the government hasn't planned to build enough prison places in the UK. So have been forced to make drastic cuts in the system some where (i.e on costs) & cutting sentences is the outcome. Its purely a symptom of political failure by the new labor government & Blair.

**What will Gordon Brown do next?? watch this space as they say.

Cutting sentences means reducing the actual time you're sentenced to. In other words, instead of being sentenced to 5 years for a particular offence, you only get 3 years.

Early release means letting you out before the normal end for your sentence.

A prisoner can be released early on parole - the remainder of the sentence is still there, and if they re-offend or break the conditions of their parole, they can be taken back into prison to serve it. If the sentence is cut, then they are simply free to go.
