speaking of plagues, where did all the blood come from? (water to blood)?

did it contain real blood cells?

It didn't. The water did not turn to blood, it can't. Some algal blooms will give the water a reddish hue and make it taste unpleasant. These have occurred in the Nile from time to time. The myth about the water turning to blood was probably a reference to such a bloom.

In a metaphoric sense, it came from all of the people who murdered each other in the name of land, politics, and religion.
