That is just like saying 'should the South and North Island of New Zealand be two separate countries...'

No, We have no desire to become separate from the rest of Australia...and theres no real political, economic or security reasons for some a major overhaul of both everything Australian and Tasmanian. Imagine creating a new monetary system. I think before Tasmania even considers becoming a separate country (ps. not going to happen) Australia should become a republic! :-)

I don't think so but I think a lot of people from Tasmania feel that way judging from the reception we received from the smaller towns in Tasmania. I think Tasmania doesn't have an economy stable enough to support itself. With high unemployment and other issues I think it needs Federal funding and other states to assist (not support) in Tassie being viable. Beautiful place though.

The builders of the Panama Canal got here to Australia and separated Tasmania from something of the country. regrettably, they learnt to construct boats and a few of them have escaped to the mainland.

No. It can't, anyway. Secession from the Commonwealth of Australia is not possible for any of the States. I know idiots like Joh Bejollicky-Peanuts spoke of it for Queensland but it can't be done.

economically it would be a disaster.
what would be better would be to get rid of all those "gunns in my pocket pollies"!!!
other places have tried it - notably the U.S.A. and Quebec has had referendums to seccede from canada - hasn't happened!!
