Käliya felt great anger within his heart, and thus he grabbed Krishna with his mighty coils. Seeing the incredible way in which Krishna was enveloped in the coils of the serpent, the affectionate cowherd boys and other inhabitants of Vrindavana immediately became stunned out of fear. They had dedicated everything to Krishna: their lives, property, affection, activities—everything was for Krishna—and when they saw Him in that condition, they became overwhelmed with fear and fell down on the ground. All the cows, bulls and small calves became overwhelmed with grief, and they began to look at Him with great anxiety. Out of fear they could only cry in agony and stand erect on the bank, unable to help their beloved Krishna.

Question : All the inhabitants of Vrindavan were in fear , but some one was smiling , who was he/she? And why was he/she smiling ?

(No not Krishna)

BALARAMA was smiling when Krishna was caught by the Serpent Kind Kalia.

A serpent king who had five heads, and dwelt in a deep pool of the Yamuna, with numerous attendant serpents. His mouths vomited fire and smoke and he laid waste all the country round.

Krishna, while yet a child, jumped into his pool, when he was quickly laced and entwined in the coils of the snakes. His companions and friends were horrified, but Balarama smiled called upon him to exercise his divine power. He did so, and the serpents were soon overcome. Placing his foot on the middle head of Kaliya, he compelled him and his followers to implore mercy. He spared them, but bade Kaliya and his follwers to free the earth from their presence, and to remove to the ocean.

The Asura Kalanemi is said to have been animate in him. He was said to live again in Kansa and in Kaliya.-

That was Lord Balarama who is the master of all knowledge. He knew how powerful Krishna was and that a Käliya was of the material world and could not hurt him.

We know it was Balrama who was smiling but does any one know what Kalia is.

Kalia the great five mouthed serpent whom Krishna drives out of Yamuna.

What is this serpent is notthing but industries which were along the river Yamuna at that time and Krishna removed them from near the river to save it from pollution of water, air, earth and to save the life of the area the great river Yamuna.

Yes, that is what I believe and know it is true. Our mythology has many hidden meanings and we need to know and understand them.

Just imagine why Balrama an incarnation of great serpent god Shesh Naga will smile on seeing one of his own getting beaten and thrown out of its home. Because Shesh naga is no one else but the earth deep below the ocean and all the pollution is going to settle on him only so he is happy knowing this is actually helping him.

The industries and their owners are the serpent Kalia and Krishna here is actually teaching us the importance of saving our natural heritage.
