I am visiting New York City with family in a few weeks, and I know this is a really stupid question but for some reason it's harder to find then it would seem. Do the busses and metro systems and subways run ALL night? Let's say I got a craving to go somewhere at 2AM or I had to work until midnight [if I lived there haha] would there always be a time to catch the metro? How often do they come by? Any inormation or websites you have will be very helpful to me :)

The reason why I ask is because I am from the Washington D.C. area and midnight was usually the cut off for the metro :)

New York has a wonderful public transportation system. The subways and buses run all night; of the few lines that stop running late or on weekends, alternative routes are available. Very late at night, the buses and subways don't run as frequently, so you may have to wait for a half hour. During the day, most buses run at least every ten minutes and during the rush hour, the trains leave every five minutes. I don't find the subways at all dangerous late at night - they don't run as often, so they are often so crowded that there are no seats available. It's probably safer (certainly more comfortable) than the afternoon when the schools let out and mobs of loud, show-off students are on the trains.

The commuter trains such as Metro North to Westchester and beyond, do stop running late at night.

Here is a link to the subway map, schedules, etc. When you get here, get a free subway and bus map from the agent in all subway stations (they are also available free at the public libraries)
http://www.mta.info/nyct/maps/submap.htm

Should you have any questions, call the MTA at 718-3301234
They have recordings about train and bus delays, track work, etc. Live agents are at the phones from about 6am to 10:30pm - they can help you map out your trip.

Have a great time!

The NYC subway system and bus system are 24 hour, as are the commuter rail systems to/from the suburbs. However, some specific lines stop running at midnight, or earlier. If you are going to stay out late, carefully plan your trip in advance using www.mta.info (including the "service advisories" section which explains about late-night construction detours).

It's called the buses or subways and they both run 24 hours. Keep in mind though that there are certain trains that don't run overnight or on weekends. But yes you could use the subway during the overnight hours, the trains don't come as frequent as during the day though.

NYC does NOT have a metro, we have buses and subways.
The subway runs 24 hours. need EXACT change
($2.00 U.S.) or purchase a Metrocard in the subway.

The card can be used on the bus or subway.
Ask the subway attendant for subway/bus maps.

At 2:00 a.m. you walk, depending on you are in the city, you may not want to back because some areas are dangerous. Become familiar with the shops in the area where you will stay and ask how late they are open. Many deli's are open late or all night.

It never stops running, although at certain times of the night they become less frequent. If you're not familiar with the subway, I really wouldn't suggest using it, let alone at night... for the most part, whatever you want to do during the day is within walking distance, and it's always a nice walk. The subway during the summer is SWELTERING so... I'd use it as a last resort. At night (say 2am, like you said) I would definitely suggest a taxi... since you're not so familiar, you'll end up where you're supposed to go- it's worth the extra money. (To me, at least)

the subways/buses run 24/7 because all kinds of people depend on them. some trains only run late nights, all you need is to look at the subway stops, they will telll you evrything.
and watch out, all kinds of people come out late at night, be careful.

runs 24/7

Any idiot can use it (it is simple, if you are not sure, ask someone there and they will help you)

Any where a tourist is going is safe at 2am

I hate when people from the Midwest try and answer questions in the NY section.
